The case of Holmes – the founder of the Theranos start-up and once perceived as a young rising star in Silicon Valley – was one of the loudest cases in recent years. She was devoted to, among others HBO’s best-selling book and documentary.

A woman – once compared to Steve Jobs – claimed that her company had invented a device that would revolutionize medicine by being able to perform quick blood tests using only a few drops of it. Before it was revealed that she had greatly exaggerated her achievement, she had managed to attract many influential investors. Among them was, among others former Pentagon chief Gen. James Mattis, and former US chiefs George Schultz and Henry Kissinger. At its peak, the company was valued at $ 19 billion, though it ultimately collapsed in 2018.

Holmes pleaded not guilty, arguing that she had acted in good faith. She also claimed that she was used and manipulated by her partner – business and life – Sunny Balwaniei, with whom she ran the company. Balwani will respond to allegations of fraud in a different lawsuit.
