How to perform an exercise test?
I am 62 years old, I am a man, I have been taking pressure pills for two years. I did the tests: heart echo, EKG, blood count, sugar, cholesterol and all the results are normal. I check my blood pressure regularly at home and it is normal. I was left with an exercise test, which could no longer be performed three times due to high blood pressure: 160/100, despite the fact that I was given tablets under my tongue to help reduce the pressure. After returning from the clinic, the blood pressure dropped to 117/77. Please help me with the exercise test recommended by my cardiologist.
Elevated blood pressure values in patients with arterial hypertension before or during the exercise test are a frequent clinical problem. A contraindication to performing an exercise test is indeed severe uncontrolled arterial hypertension, but with the values you provide, this test can still be performed. Increased blood pressure values before the stress test are most often observed in patients with recently diagnosed and briefly treated hypertension and in patients with insufficiently compensated arterial hypertension. Nervousness prior to the test may be responsible for the increased blood pressure. You can repeat the blood pressure measurement after a dozen or so minutes of rest. I propose to discuss the exercise test with a cardiologist. Perhaps he will suggest another stress test, e.g. heart scintigraphy with dipyridamole (SPECT).
