Electromagnetic waves can reverse Alzheimer’s disease

NeuroEM Therapeutics today announced the results of an open-label clinical trial that showed reversal of cognitive impairment in Alzheimer’s patients after just two months of treatment using a special device that uses the power of electromagnetic waves.

Hope for Alzheimer’s Patients

Scientists spent two months studying an innovative method based on electromagnetic waves – Transcranical Electromagnetic Treatment (TEMT). Eight people aged 63 and over with mild Alzheimer’s disease twice a day received a one-hour session using a headgear-like device – I will remember. The device contains a number of specialized electromagnetic wave emitters. During treatment, the patients were not restricted in their mobility.

Initial results confirmed that the device is safe for health. The researchers did not observe any abnormal behavior or changes in the body functioning of the subjects. Two months later, the patients underwent a brain scan to detect small nodules or microscopic cerebral hemorrhages. Nothing like that happened.

The tests showed that the results of the people receiving treatment improved significantly. Seven out of eight patients increased their memory, thinking, judgment, and other cognitive skills by 4 or more points. This suggests a marked improvement in cognitive performance and mental function.

In addition, MRI showed that the brains of treated patients had better communication between neurons in the area of the brain involved in cognitive integration. This improvement was sustained even two weeks after the end of treatment.

How does an innovative therapy for Alzheimer’s treatment work?

Doctors have not yet understood the exact mechanisms of treatment, but they believe that TEMT can penetrate the brain’s neurons and break down the aggregated toxic proteins of beta amyloid and tau in cells. This is an innovative method, because so far no solution has been found that would specifically target these proteins. They are considered to be one of the causes of neurodegenerative changes in the brain.

All patients still wanted to use the device after the end of the study. They are now participating in an extension study of an average duration of 17 months. The next step is to conduct clinical trials involving approximately 150 people with mild and moderate Alzheimer’s disease. If the research is successful, the company will apply for MemorEM’s approval to the Food and Drug Administration as a treatment for Alzheimer’s disease.

The results of the study were published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease.
