Electric toothbrush – how does it work?
The electric toothbrush is one of the types of toothbrushes used for oral hygiene. In addition, manual toothbrushes and sonic toothbrushes are also popular.
Electric toothbrushes have a built-in electric motor, thanks to which the brush head can perform pulsating, oscillating and rotating movements, thoroughly cleaning the tooth surfaces.

Electric toothbrush – construction
The traditional electric toothbrush consists of a rechargeable battery station (including a charger induction coil) to which a waterproof handle is attached. This is where the brush head is located. It is assumed that it should be replaced at most every three months.
- Changing the toothbrush frequently is a must!
Some – new – models of electric toothbrushes have special color-changing bristles, alerting the user to the degree of wear of the electric toothbrush.
The device has buttons that turn the equipment on and off, as well as mode buttons that enable, among others, changing the speed of rotation of the head.
Electric toothbrush – who will it be best for?
Choosing an electric toothbrush is good for almost everyone. The brush head reaches hard-to-reach places, such as the spaces between molars, which are difficult to brush with a traditional toothbrush.
In addition, the electric toothbrush can be used from the age of three, because there are special models for children with colorful attachments that make them much more willing to care for oral hygiene.

Types of electric toothbrushes
Among electric toothbrushes we distinguish:
- Electric rotary toothbrush – the round head makes from 7600 to 8800 rotational-oscillating-rotational movements per minute;
- An electric rotating-pulsating toothbrush – in addition to standard movements, it presses against the teeth. Can do 20-000 movements per minute;
- An electric rotating-pulsating-oscillating brush – the head of the electric toothbrush does not only move right-left, but also up and down. Performs a maximum of 58 revolutions per minute;
- Electric sonic toothbrush – is also known as an electric sonic toothbrush. Compared to other models, it has a rectangular head instead of a round one, which makes it easier to remove plaque. Performs 30-000 movements per minute;
- Electric ultrasonic toothbrush – produces ultrasonic waves with a power of 1.6 MHz, which is equivalent to 96 pulsations per minute. As a result, bacteria can be “broken” by the microparticles.

Electric toothbrush – what should you know before buying?
Before purchasing an electric toothbrush, there are several important factors to consider. First of all, the charging time of the device is important, which can be from 12 to 24 hours. It’s good to know that an electric toothbrush will last for two to three weeks on a single charge, which can be important for people who travel frequently.
Another important factor that influences the choice of a toothbrush are also different modes of operation depending on the model chosen. Some of them are intended for people with sensitive teeth and gums, those that clean deeply or with the ability to remove plaque and tartar.
It is also worth mentioning that some – modern – electric toothbrushes have dedicated mobile applications, thanks to which you can check which places have been thoroughly cleaned.
Electric toothbrush – how to thoroughly brush your teeth?
The electric toothbrush is used similarly to a manual toothbrush. Apply toothpaste on the head and then apply it to the teeth at an angle of 45 degrees. Depending on the selected operating mode of the device, the movements may be faster or slower.
In this case, you should remember not only about the outside of the teeth, but also the inside, because mineralization occurs more often in the places where the tongue meets the teeth, which can lead to caries.
In addition, we must not forget to thoroughly clean the surfaces of the tongue itself, on which microbes accumulate. In addition, a well-cleaned tongue will keep your breath fresh.

An electric toothbrush and a traditional toothbrush – what are the differences?
Both electric toothbrushes and manual toothbrushes have their advantages and disadvantages. The main difference between them is the speed of brushing your teeth, much longer in the case of a manual device.
In addition, with an electronic toothbrush, we are able to make many more movements per minute than with a manual toothbrush, for which we use the strength of the hand muscles. In addition, we can massage the periodontium with an electronic toothbrush. Due to the replaceable tip, one station can be used by the whole family.
- Do you brush your teeth often in a hurry? You can hurt yourself
In addition, the electric toothbrush is extremely easy to use, which makes cleaning the oral cavity easier for people with disabilities. On the other hand, if we press the head too hard against the teeth, we can damage the enamel. In addition, we need electricity to operate the electronic model, so if we often leave or stay in places where we cannot charge the toothbrush, a traditional toothbrush will be a better solution.
The price is also a difference. Electronic models are more expensive than traditional ones. Some have a built-in timer, so we know exactly how long we should brush our teeth.
Sonic toothbrush – how is it different from a traditional electronic model?
The sonic toothbrush uses the action of ultrasounds, making sweeping and pulsating movements. The fibers on the head and the paste are set into them, creating microbubbles hitting the walls of the teeth.
The sonic toothbrush can be used from the age of six.
Sonic toothbrushes do not rub enamel as much as traditional electronic or manual models, so they can be used by people with sensitive teeth or people with implants.

Electric toothbrush – can we skip other oral hygiene steps?
While electric toothbrushes are considered superior to traditional toothbrushes, simply using them cannot be the only step in cleaning your mouth.
As already mentioned, we must not forget to clean the tongue on which anaerobic bacteria accumulate. For this reason, we should get a special scraper or choose an electric toothbrush with the tongue surface cleaning mode.
- Find out why teeth break down
In addition to brushing our teeth and tongue, we must not forget to rinse our mouth regularly with a special liquid that will not only protect the enamel from bacteria, but also provide fresh breath.
Electric toothbrush with irrigator – action
There are also models of electric toothbrushes with irrigators available on the market, which not only clean the teeth thoroughly, but also have the function of cleaning the interdental surfaces with a jet of water, which is fired under pressure. Typically, electric toothbrushes can switch the pressure as needed.
Electric toothbrush – how much does it cost?
The cost of the toothbrush you choose will vary depending on the number of modes the model has, as well as the interchangeable heads. The lowest price of an electric toothbrush is about PLN 100. However, there are models that are much more expensive. An electric toothbrush with an irrigator can cost about PLN 500.
There are also models on the market with prices above PLN 1000. Such toothbrushes can have many more modes and intensity of action, as well as a dedicated application, thanks to which we can control the condition of the oral cavity on an ongoing basis.
