The nursing pillows are one of the basic elements of the baby’s layette. Unfortunately, as recent findings have shown, not all of these types of products are safe. The Bobby Company after the death of eight infants between December 2015 and June 2020 in the US, has withdrawn over 3 million of its signature cushions-sunbeds from the market intended for this age group.

The American company appealed to the parents and guardians who purchased the product, asking them to stop using it immediately. According to the opinion of the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), infants who died were asphyxiated when placed on a pillow on their back, stomach or side. Acting President of CPSC Robert S. Adler stated:
These kinds of incidents are painful. Infants cannot sleep safely on these pillows due to the risk of suffocation. Boppy products are simply too risky to remain in the market

The Bobby Company pillows have been available in many colors and designs throughout the United States and Canada and online since January 2004. They were also distributed in other countries, including Poland. In a statement, a spokesman for the company revealed that he was devastated at the news of the tragedy caused by The Bobby Company products, but also noted that The pillows-loungers for feeding were never intended for sleeping infants and contained a warning not to use them unattended.
«In the event of non-compliance with the safety warnings, including warnings against using the product for infant sleep and / or using the product without adult supervision, the baby may suffocate. This includes situations where infants may suffocate if they roll, move, or are placed on a sun lounger in a position obstructing their breathing, or roll off the sun lounger on an exterior surface such as an adult pillow or soft sheets that make it difficult to breathe, ”says the statement available on the Chicco website.

After the tragic reports from the USA, the owner of the Artsana company decided to voluntarily withdraw them from distribution in European countries, including Poland.
«In line with the decision by The Boppy Company in the US to voluntarily recall its newborn lounger – in collaboration with the US Consumer Product Safety Commission – Artsana announces a voluntary recall of a similar product known as Boppy Hug & Nest, distributed in Europe and other countries (not in the US and Canada) from 2016 onwards » – explained in the statement.

At the end of the announcement, the company reminded parents that the best place to sleep for babies is on a flat, hard surface in a crib or playpen.
