Cultivation and care

Sowing for seedlings can begin as early as the end of February and until mid-May. Eggplants are slow to sprout, which is why they are planted so early.

Advice! Choose not the freshest seeds. Best suited are those that have been stored for the second year. Annual seeds germinate very slowly and have low germination.

  1. The soil before sowing should be prepared using peat and other fertilizers.
  2. Place the seeds in the ground 1,5 cm deep, sprinkle with soil and lightly compact.
  3. Cover the box with cling film to keep moisture out.
  4. Before germination, the temperature in the room should be at least +25 °C. And when the sprouts appear, you can gradually lower it to +20 ° C, but not less than +18 ° C.
Important! If the air temperature in the room drops to +13 ° C, eggplant seedlings may simply die.

You can start picking seedlings when 1-2 full leaves appear. A week before planting, the plants must be hardened off. If this is not done, the sprouts simply cannot withstand direct sunlight and temperature changes from day to night. The approximate landing time is mid-May, when frosts are no longer terrible.

Eggplant Vikar

The distance between seedlings should be 20-30 cm, and between rows – 50-60 cm. The soil after planting should be sprayed with water, as eggplants love moisture very much. Further eggplant care should include regular watering, fertilizing and loosening the soil. It is not necessary to tie this variety, as the bush is low and holds its shape well.

Previously, eggplants were rare guests in my garden. I’ve always been disappointed by their harvest. It happened that during the season she could collect up to 5 fruits. A neighbor recommended the Vikar variety. She really always grew excellent eggplants. I tried it the following year and the results were very good. Delicious and beautiful fruits. Since I doubted and planted a little, it was not enough for conservation. I’ll plant more next time.

My whole family loves eggplant. I often cook them and preserve them for the winter. We try to grow them ourselves, like many other vegetables. Our favorite among all varieties is Vikar. He is short and does not need a garter. Unpretentious to weather conditions. Caring for him is quite easy. The fruits are very tasty, without bitterness.

I prefer tall varieties of eggplant, but I really liked Vikar for its taste. I plant this variety every year. Whatever the summer, cold or hot, it still gives a good harvest.

To summarize

Eggplants are considered very whimsical heat-loving plants, and not everyone undertakes to grow them. But the Vikar eggplant variety is great for cold climates. It breaks all stereotypes and allows you to grow delicious homemade eggplants where any other variety would not stand.
