Efferalgan suppositories – action
Efferalgan is a non-opioid drug with analgesic and antipyretic properties. The active substance of the drug is paracetamol, which is designed to block the action of cyclooxygenase 2 (COX-2) in the brain and in the spinal cord – an enzyme responsible for the synthesis of prostaglandins. The paracetamol contained in the drug does not have an anti-inflammatory effect and does not damage the gastric mucosa. The rectal effect of paracetamol is slower than that of oral administration.

Efferalgan and drug interactions
- The paracetamol contained in the drug increases the effect of coumarin anticoagulants.
- The use of salicylamide increases the time of paracetamol excretion.
- It should not be taken simultaneously with MAO inhibitors or within 2 weeks of stopping treatment with these preparations, due to the possibility of agitation and high fever.
- The use of drugs that increase hepatic metabolism, such as rifampicin, antiepileptic drugs, sleeping pills (barbiturates) or the consumption of alcohol can cause toxic damage to the liver, even when using the recommended doses of paracetamol.
- The use of paracetamol and NSAIDs increases the risk of renal dysfunction.
- The use of phenytoin may reduce the effectiveness of paracetamol and increase the risk of liver toxicity.
- The use of probenecid may reduce the excretion of paracetamol.
- Caution should be exercised when co-administering isoniazid or zidovudine.
- Taking paracetamol may affect the results of laboratory tests, for example, blood glucose or uric acid tests.
