Allergy medications are preparations that are used by people struggling with the troublesome effects of allergies and allergic reactions. Allergy medications are antihistamines, among which the most popular are: tablets, nasal drops, eye drops, herbal teas and ointments. What medications for allergy are the most effective and how to choose them according to the type of allergy?
Allergy medications in tablets
For allergy, antihistamines are used, the action of which is to inhibit the histamine responsible for the occurrence of allergy symptoms. These types of drugs are most often purchased in tablets and administered orally. Allergy medications in tablets, which can be purchased at any pharmacy without a prescription, are divided into:
- XNUMXst generation antihistamines – these are tablets containing chloriframine, hydroxyzine, clemastin, and phenazolin. These drugs help fight unpleasant symptoms, but at the same time cause fatigue, drowsiness, headaches, dizziness, and constipation.
- XNUMXnd generation antihistamines – these tablets contain ceterizine and loratadine. They are called new generation drugs and do not cause fatigue and drowsiness.
Allergy medications in tablets are very effective and are used once a day.
Allergy medications in the form of drops
Allergy medications can be taken in the form of nasal or eye drops. Nasal drops contain such compounds as: xylometazoline, anthazoline or naphazoline. These ingredients reduce congestion and swelling of the nasal mucosa, which reduces a runny nose and facilitates breathing. Unfortunately, nasal drops cannot be used very often, because long-term use can damage the mucosa. The advantage of antiallergic eye drops is much faster action than tablets. Eye drops also help to moisturize the eyeball.

Allergy medications – ointments and gels
Allergy medications in the form of ointments and gels are most often used for ailments that occur on the skin. Skin changes that are worth using ointments and gels are: swelling, redness, burning, itching or rash. The active substances in antiallergic ointments are usually: acetate hydrocortisate or dimethindene maleinate. Ointments with antiallergic properties will not only help heal skin lesions after allergy, but also cause a pleasant cooling sensation in hot and pathologically changed places.
Allergy medications – herbal preparations
Herbal preparations for allergies can be used in the form of teas or infusions, which are drunk with breakfast or dinner. They are most often a dietary supplement for people who struggle with allergic reactions. In addition to alleviating allergy symptoms, herbal preparations strengthen the immune system. Herbal anti-allergic teas can be brewed with evening primrose, sage leaves, nettle herb or borage.
Prescription allergy medications
The most popular prescription allergy medications are the so-called third-generation antihistamines. These drugs include, among others: fexofenadine (eg Telfast 180, Telfexo 180 mg), desloratadine and levocetrizine. The advantages of these prescription drugs include very fast action, low toxicity and no effect on the nervous system. Corticosteroids, cromones and anti-leukotriene drugs are also used for allergies.
