Is dementia a disease?
According to the definition of the World Health Organization, dementia (or dementia) is a series of symptoms that result from disease or damage to certain areas of the brain. Dementia may be indicated by forgetting about recent events, a decrease in interest in people, work, passions, difficulties in performing daily activities and lack of control over finances, improper assessment of threats, nervousness, anxiety, distrust, mood swings, denial of mistakes and mistakes.
Dementia is not, as is commonly believed, the same as Alzheimer’s disease, but is often associated with it. It is also characteristic of other conditions, such as frontotemporal dementia (FTD) and Lewy body dementia.
Unusual symptoms of dementia
The UK’s Alzheimer’s Society explains that people who develop dementia may crave sweet, fatty and high-carbohydrate foods. They also forget about being well mannered at the table. Or, they may not know when to stop eating, drinking alcohol, or smoking.
How is dementia treated?
There is currently no cure for this disease. It develops gradually, and with time it leads to total helplessness of the patient. Treatment focuses on improving the quality of life of the patient and his relatives. Certain medications can, of course, delay the progression of the disease, but they will not reverse the changes that are taking place in the brain.
Medications can also be used to reduce any comorbid symptoms. So they will help with insomnia, reduce anxiety. Psychotherapy or therapy with art, music, all memory training, mindfulness and sensory exercises can also work.
“I know firsthand the havoc that dementia is wreaking on families when they realize there is no cure right now,” says Scottish racing driver Sir Jackie Stewart on the website of the charity Race Against Dementia.
The athlete started it after his wife Helen was diagnosed with FTD in 2014. The organization raises funds for world-leading research into new treatments and prevention. They are to help overcome this disease.
