Early potato varieties: description, characteristics
Summer residents love early potato varieties for the opportunity to enjoy their fruits already in the middle of summer. After planting, the plants quickly begin the process of tuber development and formation. The first crop can be harvested immediately after flowering.
Description of varieties of early potatoes
The first tubers have a very delicate, thin skin. Such fruits cannot be stored for a long time, they quickly lose moisture and deteriorate under the influence of environmental factors. They are used directly for cooking or selling on the market.
These varieties begin active growth already at a temperature of + 10 ° C, when the soil warms up a little
In August-September, the tubers will finally get stronger, their skin will become strong. Such fruits can be stored for a long time and left stocks for the winter. The ripening time depends not only on the variety, but also on other factors:
- landing time;
- seed quality;
- the amount of moisture;
- the presence of nutrients in the soil;
- weather conditions and climate features;
- protection from pests and diseases.
To play it safe, summer residents plant several early varieties at once. When exposed to the same external factors, they behave differently.
Characteristics of early varieties of potatoes
Each variety is attractive in one way or another, which can be described using the example of the most popular types of early potatoes:
- Bellarosa. German hybrid that ripens 45-60 days after planting. Large fruits weighing up to 200 g have a pink, rough skin. A small number of eyes can be observed on its surface. The plant tolerates drought well, is immune to diseases, and tolerates transportation well. The yellow pulp quickly boils down, has a pleasant sweetish taste.
- “Karatop”. Ripening occurs in 50-70 days. It has good disease resistance, gives a bountiful harvest. After cooking, yellow fruits retain their shape and dense structure. They grow small – up to 100 g. They can be stored for a long time under the right conditions.
- Gala. You can harvest 70-80 days after planting the seeds. Oval fruits have a smooth surface with few eyes. The starch content in them is low, so the pulp retains its shape and does not boil over. The plant is resistant to scab, but is defenseless against rhizoctonia, therefore, it requires prophylactic spraying.
It is not necessary to plant only early varieties for potatoes throughout the territory. The weather can be unfavorable, affecting the harvest. Therefore, do not forget about mid-season and late varieties.
