It is a synthetic hydrocarbon alcohol. Chemical formula C12H24O11.
It is made from milk sugar (lactose) obtained from whey (milk).
Lactitol is mainly used as a low-calorie sweetener in baking and confectionery products. The sweetness is about 40% of the sweetness of sugar.
It can affect the body as a laxative.
