What is an e-prescription?

An e-prescription, also known as an electronic prescription, is a prescription that your doctor will send you by e-mail or SMS. Importantly, you will still get a paper version as well. There you will find all the necessary information, such as:

  1. drug name,
  2. dosage method,
  3. drug prices,
  4. prescription expiry date,
  5. who and when issued the prescription.

How to get an e-prescription?

Remember to register with Patient’s Internet Account. Otherwise you will not receive an e-mail or SMS prescription. You will also not use other amenities.

Create a Trusted Profile and register in the Internet Patient Account, i.e. IKP. Thanks to this, you will have free access to the history of electronic prescriptions, e-exemptions and medical documents. Medical staff will also have access to your account. This solution will improve the safety and quality of treatment. It will also save you a lot of time.

If you do not have an Internet Patient Account, the doctor will give you an information printout with a barcode and PIN. Based on this, you can also choose a drug.

You will find a 4-digit code in the e-prescription sent by SMS. It was generated by the system after the doctor entered the appropriate data. You can also get an electronic prescription by email. A file (in PDF format) with a barcode will be attached to the message. The pharmacist will scan the code from the information printout or from the phone. As you can see, the e-prescription is very convenient.

Can a doctor issue an e-prescription at a home visit?

Of course, it may happen that the doctor will not be able to use the P1 system during a home visit. However, there is a simple solution. In such a situation, the doctor may issue a prescription on paper. Importantly, he does not have to indicate in the document why he issued the prescription in this way.

What are the advantages of an electronic prescription?

First of all, the e-prescription is clear. Therefore, you no longer have to worry about getting the wrong drug or the pharmacist will send you to a doctor. Importantly, even if you lose or destroy the printout, the electronic prescription is still in the e-health system (P1). All you need to do is log in to your Internet Patient Account (IKP). You can get it at any pharmacy in Poland.

You also have more time to fill your e-prescription. You can choose drugs within 365 days. However, there are a few exceptions:

  1. antibiotics: 7 days,
  2. narcotic drugs and psychotropic drugs: 30 days,
  3. immunological preparations: 120 days.

Also check:

  1. Reimbursed drugs – division, list, the most important information
  2. Telemedicine – frequently asked questions and answers
