The spreading coronavirus has forced society to implement many precautions in everyday life. One of the main recommendations is to limit leaving home. But what if we need to buy a prescription drug? The entire procedure may be facilitated by the e-prescriptions introduced in January. How to use them during the coronavirus threat?
Medical advice without leaving home
The threat of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus keeps many people awake at night – especially when you need to deal with matters that require going to a specific institution. The issue of chronically ill and the elderly may seem to be a big problem. If you take prescription drugs regularly, you will usually need to visit a doctor’s office. It is also an embarrassing situation for people in quarantine who need prescription medications. Currently, however, the entire procedure can be simplified by using e-prescriptions.
Do you want to extend your prescription for the medications you are taking and at the same time talk to your doctor without waiting in line? Make an appointment on the haloDoctor platform. You can also change your current health care clinic by taking advantage of free consultations with your family doctor. Check how it works
You can get an electronic prescription not only by going to a clinic. An alternative is to use online medical consultation or telephone. This may be the best solution for people from high-risk groups who are particularly at risk of coronavirus – seniors and people suffering from chronic diseases (e.g. diabetes, autoimmune diseases, hypertension). They should limit leaving home, especially visiting public places.
What is a medical advice without leaving home?
- You should contact your doctor by phone or use the online chat provided by some clinics.
- During the interview, you can present your situation and the need for a given drug to the doctor. Based on the information obtained, the doctor issues an e-prescription.
- The patient receives an e-prescription code to the indicated telephone number in an SMS or a PDF attachment to the e-mail. The e-prescription will also be available on the Internet Patient Account (IKP).
After obtaining an e-prescription, you can buy the drug at the pharmacyby giving the pharmacist:
- a four-digit code from an SMS and the patient’s PESEL number;
- e-prescription barcode designed to be scanned by e-mail.

An elderly or chronically ill person who obtained an e-prescription still has to buy drugs. In order to avoid the risk of contracting the coronavirus, a loved one can take care of it. In this case, please give her the e-prescription code you received. If the person waiting for drugs is in quarantine or wants to minimize contact with other people, the drug can be given to them by leaving it at the door of the apartment.
When giving drugs to a sick person, hygiene rules should be followed that limit the transmission of coronavirus and other infections. The basis here is washing hands and disinfecting them with a disinfectant. You should also avoid touching the face (around the nose, mouth and eyes) and then the purchases or medications provided to the patient.
The way to improve the entire process of buying medicines by a household member or family member is to provide the selected person with an appropriate one authorizations in the IKP system. Both the authorizing person and the representative must have an active Patient Online Account. Using the system, it is possible to grant an attorney access to selected data for a specified period of time. This makes it possible to set an authorized person as the direct recipient of e-prescriptions.
