Many of us find it easier to live alone. Why?
At all times, a person organized his life in such a way as not to be left alone. And now the situation is changing. For the first time in history, a significant number of people of different ages and social groups began to live alone, either at some time in their lives (after divorce, the death of a spouse), or without marrying at all. From 1996 to 2006 their number increased by 33%! For many of them, this is a conscious choice, and, moreover, they do not feel alone, says Eric Kleinenberg, a New York University (USA) sociologist. While researching the topic, he analyzed the data of sociologists and marketers for seven years, conducted about 300 interviews with “loners” together with his assistants. In his book, he explains this trend by a complex set of reasons (among them social security, the cult of the individual, the changed role of women) and comes to the conclusion that in any case it is already irreversible. We must accept this as a fact and restructure social policy accordingly, the scientist says. On Russian sites that published excerpts from the book, the numbers of views and shares skyrocketed. Apparently, she came to us just in time.
