PSYchology

Predictions are of two types, says the famous French geneticist Axel Kahn in the preface to this book.

When all the knowledge on which future technologies depend has already been obtained, we can safely talk about new opportunities. When a fundamental intellectual breakthrough is yet to be made, future achievements (and especially their timing) remain unpredictable. But the most important uncertainty is related to human nature: will a person be able (and will he want) to use his new power for the benefit of a happy and united humanity? The author of the book is a great optimist: he believes not only in scientific progress, but also in the ability of man to find the best use for it. So, as you read fascinating essays about defeating Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s, about new types of superfast transportation and artificial prostheses, about self-cleaning concrete walls and air-conditioning entire cities, you need to keep in mind: this is a «desirable and possible scenario for the future.» And although it is based on existing scientific data, we have no guarantees of such a development of events. But there is hope, dizzying horizons … and entertaining reading. However, not without flaws: the reader cannot forget that he has a translation in his hands: heavy constructions, unverified, random words and terms; there is also a bias towards French achievements and developments, reflecting the national preferences of the author. But all this is easy to forgive for those who believe: in 2013, a cure for cancer will finally be found!
