E-cigarettes and bladder cancer. Substances related to this cancer have been found in the urine of e-smokers

It’s not just the lungs that are at risk from the side effects of vaping. Analyzes of 22 different studies show that substances related to bladder cancer are found in the urine of people who smoke e-cigarettes.

Smoking E-Cigarette Increases Bladder Cancer Risk?

Experts from the University of North Carolina present another reason to think about before picking up a cigarette. After a meta-analysis of the results of 22 studies, they noticed that in the urine of e-cigarette enthusiasts there are substances that promote bladder cancer. Some studies have shown their “clearly elevated concentration”.

“Smoking is the most important behavioral modifiable risk factor for bladder cancer,” says study author Prof. Marc Bjurlin.

“There is already evidence in the scientific literature that people who use e-cigarettes have similar carcinogens in their urine as traditional smokers” – adds the expert.

Although, for example, the American Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control warn against the health risks of vaping, the safety profile of e-cigarettes is not yet clearly defined – the researchers note.

And they add that the long-term action of the substances detected there increases the risk of bladder cancer.

The analysis had some limitations

“The most important effects of e-cigarette use are related to the lungs. We will not see the side effects of these and other carcinogens until a long time passes ”- explains Prof. Bjurlin.

The analysis had several limitations, including the fact that the studied populations were quite heterogeneous, and some studies involved both regular cigarette smokers and e-cigarette users. This made it difficult to judge where the carcinogenic substances were coming from.

Despite this, prof. Bjurlin cautions: “While there is no clear case between vaping and bladder cancer, it may be reasonable to suspect that e-cigarette users will be at risk of bladder cancer for several decades of exposure to such substances.”
