Eric Berne’s name is primarily associated with the book Games People Play. People who play games”, extremely popular in the 1980-1990s and reprinted more than once (Eksmo, 2007, Ardis, 2006). Now we can read in Russian an earlier work by Bern, written by him back in 1947. In it, the future creator of the transactional analysis method explains the driving forces and mechanisms of the psyche, considering a person as an energy system that seeks to “eliminate, remove and satisfy” the tensions that arise in it. Berne convincingly shows how our actions and behavior are controlled by two main drives — to create (libido) and to destroy (mortido). Speaking about the natural path of development of the psyche and how deviations arise, Berne illustrates his thoughts with fascinating stories about the inhabitants of a fictional country, whose images are remembered much better than any scientific classifications.
