Dzieiątkowski: the government is bending to the dictates of an extremist group

The fourth wave of coronavirus in Poland is in full swing. The daily number of new infections is approaching 30. Contrary to its announcements and recommendations of the Medical Council, the government does not introduce any restrictions, even at the local level. – It seems that the government is yielding to the dictatorship of an extremist group – says Dr. Tomasz Dzieśćtkowski, a virologist.

Coronavirus in Poland. The government is afraid of extremists?

Adrian Dąbek, Medonet: The Medical Council calls for restrictions or at least stricter compliance with the current rules. And the row remains deaf. How can this be explained?

Dr. Tomasz Dzieiątkowski: In my opinion, this can only be explained by politics. Nothing else.

What should be introduced?

Today I read a statement by professor Magdalena Marczyńska from the Medical Council, who proposed to enforce the existing regulations so that people follow non-pharmacological methods. And if someone does not comply, then impose a fine.

What more can be done? You can follow the example of other European countries. As I dislike the term “unvaccinated restrictions” very much, we should introduce “immunization facilities”. Perhaps we should follow the route of Austria or Slovakia, where unvaccinated people cannot enter premises, except for the most basic ones, they cannot participate in larger gatherings or public events.

Perhaps you have to enter what Germany decided: if a deliberately unvaccinated person is quarantined or hospitalized because of SARS-CoV-2 infection, there is no sickness payout.

Another thing that Italy introduced. Healthcare workers or teachers who do not provide evidence that they are vaccinated or are convalescent or fail to test negative for the virus for more than 48 hours will be taken on unpaid leave.

COVID-19 in Poland. The statistics are terrifying

At the weekend, there were 570 in quarantine. people. This is a record number since the beginning of the pandemic (on Friday this number exceeded 700 – editor’s note). Maybe this is the government’s idea, such a lockdown without a lockdown?

I don’t know what the government is thinking because I’m just a virologist. However, taking into account the statistics of disease in Poland, they are terrifying. If it must be said that Poland has succeeded in something and we are at the forefront, it is true, but it is not such a group that I would like us to be in.

Could it be even worse?

It could be worse, as much as possible. A few weeks ago, we heard from Minister Niedzielski announcements that restrictions will be introduced if the daily number of infections exceeds 10 or 15 thousand. We have over 15 and nothing happens. We heard a few days ago about 40-45 thousand. Does the government really want to make the excess number of deaths in Poland exceed 200 per year? For 2020, we had 68 thousand. excess deaths compared to previous years. A lot of data indicates that in 2021 we may have these deaths in the region of 150-200 thousand.

So bad in terms of the number of Poles who died, I am not saying that only because of COVID-19, it has not been since 1945. We have terrible results, and in the post-war years the mortality from tuberculosis, polio and other infectious diseases was very high. It has never been so bad. The problem is that the government is doing nothing or doing little. We hear around us that we should be responsible for ourselves. I have been saying this for over a year that we should be responsible for ourselves, but above all it is the role of the government to be responsible for society to any degree. And you can’t see it. We hear more and more contradictory information, such as that the coronavirus is not a problem. He was a problem from the very beginning. While it can be said that the behavior of the government in the spring of 2020 was largely responsible, and also very responsible people, now it cannot be said.

Then it began to seem to the government that it was fighting a pandemic. He did not fight the pandemic, but bought time, which, by the way, was not used properly. Or rather, it can be said that it was lost, incl. precisely because of the elections. So we have a political tether again. A similar degree of political conditioning occurred in the pandemic only under the presidency of Donald Trump. But in this case, it can be said that the Americans made a very right choice.
