Dyspnea and EKG

What could be causing shortness of breath?

I have shortness of breath and a low J-point on the EKG and only 42 years old. I am a female corporate manager – does that mean I have to lay off? ~ Sylwia

Dyspnoea can be caused by various diseases of the heart (heart failure from various causes), respiratory system (bronchial asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, pulmonary fibrosis), anemia (anemia), impaired metabolism (hyperthyroidism), but also poor physical condition, neurosis and other reasons.

A slight decrease in the J point may be within the normal range, a significant decrease accompanying the ST segment depression horizontally or obliquely downwards may occur in myocardial ischemia (coronary artery disease), left ventricular hypertrophy (in arterial hypertension, cardiomyopathy, valvular defects), but also in low levels of potassium in the blood. The lowered J point accompanying the upward slanting of the ST segment occurs during an accelerated heart rhythm due to physiological reasons (exercise, nervousness).

It is important to undergo a medical examination for a thorough history and examination of the patient. It is necessary to determine the exact nature of the ailments, how long they have been present, how often, how long they last, and in what situations (effort, stress, exposure to allergens).

The electrocardiogram should be carefully evaluated by the primary care physician and, if in doubt, by a cardiologist.
