Dull hair: how to restore shine to your hair?
Dull hair often goes hand in hand with dry hair: your hair is brittle, lackluster, coarse, and impossible to comb. To restore shine to your dull hair, you have to adapt your beauty routine with the right actions and the right products. Discover our tips for caring for your dull hair!
Why do we have dull hair?
Dull hair can be caused by many factors. Pollution, cold, wearing a hat regularly, stress, a poor diet or inadequate care can make hair dull and dry.
The hair, when overworked, eventually becomes damaged and the scales of the hair break open, making the hair dull and very sensitive. Pollution, extreme temperatures or overly tight hairstyles can all contribute to damage to the hair fiber. Stress and a bad diet can also damage the hair and the scalp: the latter develops deficiencies that cause poor hair growth, with dull, dry and very fragile hair.
Dull hair: what to do?
To treat dull hair, you have to adapt your beauty routine somewhat. Anything that can damage the hair and scalp should be avoided. Use the blow dryer as much as possible and take it easy when towel-drying your hair.
While it’s important to brush your hair once a day to hydrate the lengths with the sebum, don’t brush your hair too long or too aggressively. This could irritate the scalp and help to open up the scales in the hair more. Watch out for tight hairstyles or wearing a cap, which can make the hair look dull.
Your diet can also contribute to making your hair dull and dry: if you lack vitamins (especially B6) or iron, the scalp weakens and the hair becomes dull. Try to eat a balanced diet rich in vitamins to give your hair a boost.
Dull and dry hair, which care to use?
For dull hair, appropriate care is needed. Often dull hair becomes dry, so nourishing shampoo, conditioner and mask are needed. If your hair is thin, choose formulas with more moisturizing agents than fatty agents so as not to weigh down the hair. As dull hair is weakened, avoid aggressive shampoo formulas containing collagen, silicone or sulfate.
Instead, opt for soft, natural products that won’t harm your hair and scalp. When applying your shampoo, gently massage the scalp rather than rubbing, this will stimulate the scalp and keratin production, for stronger hair regrowth. After your shampoo, apply a conditioner to nourish the lengths. When you rinse, be careful to remove all product residue that could make the hair dull. Little trick for rinsing: run a jet of cold water on the hair, this will tighten the scales and bring shine to the hair.
Natural care and home care: the best allies for dull hair
To restore shine to dull hair, there are a few simple and natural tips to do with everyday products. For example, vinegar and lemon are known to bring strength and shine to hair. A lemon juice or a tablespoon of vinegar, mixed in a bottle of water, is an excellent rinse water for dull hair: your hair will be supple and shiny.
Vegetable oils are also great natural care for dull hair. Olive oil and castor oil are particularly suitable for strengthening hair and stimulating growth. You can use them in an oil bath: apply the oil on the lengths before going to bed, and leave on overnight under a cling film. The next morning, wash your hair well to remove residue. To be done two to three times a month, the oil bath will make your hair soft and shiny.
