He was taken to hospital with a postcovid syndrome. His lungs were 99 percent. out of order. His blood was oxygenated extracorporeal. And although the doctors “gave him a poor chance”, now 4,5-year-old Mikołaj is recuperating.

Mikołaj brought the disease from kindergarten. It started with a fever and a sore throat. The symptoms worsened until the boy finally breathed with great difficulty.
Instead of the lungs, a white spot
The boy was taken to the hospital. Doctors ordered a chest X-ray which showed that the boy’s lungs were 99 percent. out of order – they were a white spot in the photo.
Doctors confirmed that the boy had passed COVID-19. – There was also inflammation of the meninges, conjunctiva, lymph nodes, skin, ecchymosis on this skin. Liver, spleen, stomach – everything was inflamed. And then the lungs. He started to lose saturation, he was breathing heavily, they took him to the ICU, under a respirator, they transfused his blood. They gave him poor chances – said Marta Fisiak, the boy’s mother, for TVN24.

Mikołaj had to be connected for a few days to the ECMO device, which is a kind of prosthesis that replaces the work of the lungs. After a few weeks in the hospital, the doctors took another photo of the boy’s chest. It turned out that the lungs began to regenerate.
– Today, for the first time, he smiled at me, and during the entire period of his illness, despite many attempts, I did not manage to make him smile. This does not mean that we end our contact with him. Certainly, he will come to us for periodic inspections several times a year – said Prof. Krzysztof Zeman from the Institute of Polish Mother’s Health Center in Łódź.

PIMS in children. Not only Santa
From the beginning of the pandemic in the Polish Mother with PIMs there were 50 children. However, Mikołaj was a patient in the most serious condition, therefore the doctors “gave him a poor chance”.
With appropriate treatment, PIMS symptoms disappear in children 2-3 weeks after the infection, usually asymptomatic.

According to doctors, the following diseases suffer from post-COVID syndrome: cardiovascular system, respiratory system, central nervous system, digestive system, coagulation is also disturbed.
