Signs of dry skin
How do you know if your skin is dry? Sometimes it’s enough just to look in the mirror. Here are some signs that dry skin type can give out:
- the skin is thin, tender, sometimes reminiscent of parchment;
- oily sheen is completely absent, and in some cases the skin even looks dry and rough;
- pores are practically invisible or barely noticeable;
- often there is a feeling of tightness, discomfort, a desire to moisturize or “nourish” the skin;
- the skin is prone to the appearance of fine wrinkles – primarily on the forehead and around the eyes.
Up to a certain age, a dry skin type can almost seem like an advantage – after all, it is rarely prone to blackheads, does not suffer from oily sheen or rashes … However, we must not forget that, due to the nature of the structure, dry skin is prone to early aging and faster appearance age-related changes – and therefore needs care and care from an early age.
Causes of dry skin
Once again, when girls ask why the skin is prone to dryness, it is important to understand whether they mean true dry skin (its type) or dehydration (a temporary problem). If we are talking about dry facial skin – the type of skin that is inherent from birth – then the main reason can be called a genetic predisposition.
“Natural” dryness of the skin of the face, as a rule, is due to the fact that the sebaceous glands initially produce an insufficient amount of sebum (sebum). Sebum is designed to protect the surface of the skin from drying out and possible damage – and its lack leads to the fact that the skin can retain moisture in its layers worse, react faster and more sharply to external stimuli and be prone to early aging.
Skin type is a given that we are born with, and it can be impossible to completely get rid of dry skin on the face. However, even dry skin can look fresh and well-groomed, or it can show obvious signs of discomfort. This happens for a number of reasons:
- improper selection of care products;
- incorrect care: aggressive cleansing, insufficient hydration or nutrition;
- non-compliance with all rituals and stages of care, or irregular care;
- unbalanced diet or insufficient fluid intake;
- lifestyle (lack of sleep, stress and chronic overload, smoking, drinking alcohol).
These factors do not affect the skin type itself, however, they can increase the visual visibility of signs of dryness.
How to care for dry skin
What to do if the skin of the face is dry or very dry? How to properly organize home care, how to wash, how to clean? We tell the basic principles and list the daily beauty rituals.
Basic principles of care
Skin care with signs of dryness should be aimed primarily at maintaining the lipid balance, strengthening and nutrition. Here are some simple care tips:
- Regular care: even if the skin does not yet show clear signs of dryness or aging, it is always better to prevent problems rather than fight them.
- Protection from external factors: cold and wind, sunlight, temperature changes, hot water and other possible provocateurs of acute reactions.
- Permanent hydration: not only with the help of cosmetics, but also by observing the drinking regimen and maintaining the level of humidity in the premises.
Dry skin care step by step
How to deal with the signs of dry skin? How to moisturize and cleanse it and how to create a proper care system? Let’s take a step-by-step look at what your daily skin care rituals should include:
- Washing and cleansing. Dry skin already suffers from an insufficient amount of fatty lubrication, so washing and cleansing it should be approached very carefully. Pay attention to products suitable for dry skin, to gentle cleansers: for example, foam, milk, micellar water.
- Toning. An important step for dry skin, which allows you to maintain its pH balance, and also prepares it for further exposure to nourishing and moisturizing products.
- Moisturizing. An essential step for both morning and evening care rituals. Pay attention to products that contain not only moisturizing, but also moisture-retaining ingredients. They create a kind of protective “film” on the surface of the skin and help prevent excess moisture loss.
- Nutrition and strengthening. This stage helps to strengthen the barrier functions of the skin and protect it from the negative effects of external factors. Here you can give preference to thick and even oily textures – as a rule, dry skin responds to them with gratitude.
Features of seasonal care
Can the rules of skin care really depend on the time of year? Yes – and for skin with signs of dryness, this is especially true. Indeed, due to its characteristics (lack of lipids and sebum, increased vulnerability), such skin can react especially sharply to environmental factors.
Summer skin care
In summer, dry skin is especially important to protect against moisture loss. Dry and hot weather, the negative impact of ultraviolet (sunlight) – all this can provoke excessive evaporation of water from the surface of the skin, photoaging of the skin and a decrease in its barrier properties.
Summer care rituals should include moisturizing the skin and further retaining moisture in its layers, as well as protection from the negative effects of ultraviolet radiation. We recommend using a product with SPF every time you go outside – even in cloudy or cool weather.
Winter Care
In winter, skin with signs of dryness is in danger of the opposite danger – cold. Frost, wind and temperature changes when getting from the street into the room can also provoke excessive dryness and dehydration of the skin, increase its vulnerability to stress factors. Add to this the overdried air due to heating – and the picture becomes clear: in winter it is extremely important to moisturize, nourish and strengthen such skin.
How to choose skin care products for dry skin
How to moisturize very dry skin if it is flaky? What cosmetic products are suitable for dry skin and how to choose them correctly? We offer simple rules:
- look for gentle cleansers designed specifically for dry skin and taking into account its special needs;
- when choosing products for cleansing and washing, pay attention to soft and delicate products designed specifically for dry skin and taking into account its special needs;
- if necessary, use regenerating serums for the care of dry and “tired” facial skin, which help to strengthen its protective barrier and increase resistance to negative environmental factors.
