Dry alcohol: what you need to know and other interesting information

Dry alcohol (urotropine) is a substance that, when burned, has no smell, does not create smoke, and does not leave ash.

Invented in 1860 by Russian chemist Alexander Butlerov.

They are produced in portioned tablets and are in demand mainly among tourists and the military, summer residents, hikers, fishermen and mushroom pickers, as it is very convenient to use.

Benefits of dry alcohol

  1. Easy to transport when it comes to hiking or long-distance travel, mountaineering. Tablets of dry alcohol will fit in any pocket of a backpack and will not significantly affect its severity.

  2. Gives stable burning, despite a strong frost.

  3. Fire, resistant to sudden gusts of wind.

  4. If the tablets have not been completely used up, they can be lit again, the combustion efficiency will not change from this.

  5. It is possible to slightly regulate the combustion process and the heat transfer mode. The tablet is placed on the edge and the distance to the fire is chosen, the closer the closer, respectively, the pot with water / food will heat up more strongly.

  6. Available for purchase at any hardware or travel store.

Disadvantages of dry alcohol

  1. A short burning period, on average, one tablet burns for 8 minutes, during which time you can only boil a small cup of water (about 300 ml).

  2. Protection from moisture is needed, because in the wet state, dry fuel burns much worse and gives off heat.

Do not confuse dry alcohol with liquid alcohol

The name of the substance is a bit confusing. After all, at the word “alcohol”, the question arises – can it be diluted and used for medical purposes? – absolutely not!

There have been cases of human consumption of dry alcohol, out of ignorance. This leads to sad consequences for the body. Dry alcohol has nothing to do with liquid alcohol and consists of urotropine and paraffin.
