Experimental game of UPP students in copying gaits and its results

On January 27, 2017, in the Atrium shopping center (which is near the Kurskaya metro station in Moscow), UPP students undertook an experimental game “Copying gaits” based on the Distance exercise (the basic technique of the Sinton approach). Its purpose was to check how much we are able to influence with our external motor skills the state of others, and those around us.

Why did you play

The exercise “Copying gaits” is one of the tools of empathy, i.e. the ability to directly, bodily feel the state of another person, which is considered by psychologists to be one of the most important elements in establishing rapport ( quality communication between the psychologist and the client).

The exercise “Copying gaits” does not imply a subsequent questioning of the object of copying, i.e., checking for the truth of the emotional effect received by the copying person. This means that the subject of copying never knows exactly what the object whose walk he is copying is actually experiencing.

Nevertheless, a practical meaning in such an exercise (in addition to the study goals of developing a purposeful desire to copy motor skills among students) could take place if the subjects’ assessments were sufficiently correlated with each other. That is, if different people, having mastered the exercise, would give the same object the same marks.

In this case, two conclusions could be drawn:

firstly, since people adopting the same motor skills receive a similar emotional response, then, therefore, they really receive some valid information about the emotional state of the object;

secondly, if future psychologists webalize (i.e., essentially transfer to the level of consciousness) certain experiences in a similar way, then, consequently, other people should read something similar, only in a less conscious form.

The second conclusion seems to be much more interesting than the first, since it would allow judging whether which grade people generally influence their motor skills on the state of others. In other words, to what extent we influence people, and they influence us.

To study the quantitative expression of this degree, an experimental game «Copying gaits» was developed.
