On Thursday, the Ministry of Health reported 954 deaths due to COVID-19. This is the largest number of deaths since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic in Poland. This number is higher than the previous record by as many as 280 cases. How can such a high number of deaths be explained?

On Thursday, the Ministry of Health informed about 27 thousand. 887 new cases of coronavirus. This is not a record number, but the record fell for the number of deaths caused by the virus – 954 people died in total.

«19 people died from COVID-241, while 19 people died due to coexistence of COVID-713 with other diseases»- we read in the communication of the Ministry of Health.

The ministry also explained that “the high number of deaths today is the result of, inter alia, delays in reporting by medical facilities caused by the holiday season ».

Even taking the above factor into account, this figure is shocking. The previous record was 674 deaths on November 25, 2020. Now 280 more patients have died.

Coronavirus in Poland. Why are so many people dying?

Dr. Bartosz Fiałek recently spoke to Medonet about the fact that during the third wave of the coronavirus in Poland, the number of deaths may approach one thousand.

– There could be about a thousand deaths. I suspect that during the current so-called in the third wave of the epidemic, we will approach a thousand deaths in one day. The reported number in the order of a thousand may unfortunately be only a matter of time, said Fiałek. The doctor also explained that “in terms of diagnosis, deaths are delayed by an average of 16 days, more broadly within the range of 14–21 days”.

Recall, on Friday, March 26, a record number of COVID-19 infections was recorded in Poland: over 35 thousand. Experts explain that the consequence of such increases in infections is more deaths after about two weeks. This is confirmed in the latest statistics provided by the Ministry of Health.

Bartosz Fiałek also explained why the data on deaths in the middle of the week are usually the highest.

– On weekends, reporting is worse at all levels, including the number of deaths. These deaths are reported on the following days, as all overdue documents needed to complete the death form are sent to the physician declaring the death. As you can see, the highest numbers are given by the Ministry of Health on Wednesdays and Thursdays, which means that some deaths from weekends can be reported on Tuesdays or Wednesdays. – explained the doctor.
