Drama, irony and a bit of politics: autumn movie news

We are used to seeing these people on the screen, but this time they took a position on the other side of it. And, it must be admitted, they managed to achieve success. Three new films this autumn, in which famous actors acted as directors, definitely deserve our attention.

1. “Chernobyl” by Danila Kozlovsky

We will finally oppose our famous American “Chernobyl”, their serial detail – the brevity of the film, harsh realism – a sublime myth, corrosive documentary – a legend about heroes. Which is quite justified: there were a lot of heroes in Chernobyl. And Danila Kozlovsky is used to dealing with heroic content…

Another question is that the director turned out to be a real star: the story of a hedonistic firefighter, a young engineer and a diver, who prevent the most terrible outcome of a disaster, breathes the truth of characters and circumstances. And its rhythm and energy seem to be second only to the energy of the atomic nucleus.

Cast: Danila Kozlovsky, Filipp Avdeev, Oksana Akinshina, Igor Chernevich, Ravshana Kurkova.

2. “Fall” by Viggo Mortensen

Acting triumph awaited Mortensen on the threshold of his 60th birthday. His success in the Green Book has not yet died out, as the directorial debut “The Fall” thundered at America’s main film festival “Sundance” and may well again lead Viggo Mortensen to a nomination for a well-deserved “Oscar”.

The story of a homosexual son who is forced to reunite with an aged and weakened conservative father is both sarcastic and sad and futuristic-autobiographical: Mortensen, who raised his son alone, seems to foresee the dangers of fatherhood in old age.

Cast: Viggo Mortensen, Lance Henriksen, Laura Linney, Sverrir Gudnason, David Cronenberg.

3. “Honest Candidate” by John Stewart

The long-term solo of the host of the political satirical program The Daily Show with John Stewart on Comedy Central made him famous outside the United States. Moreover, as a satirist, uncompromisingly dispelling the sacredness of “big politics”.

And as director Stewart continues this case: in his “Honest Candidate,” a Democratic political strategist helps a retired colonel, a notoriously marginal election, become mayor of a small town – after all, it takes place in the traditionally conservative Midwest.

Cast: Steve Carell, Chris Cooper, Rose Byrne.
