Dracaena transplant after buying at home

Dracaena transplant after buying at home

Dracaena transplant is not difficult. But this has to be done often, since the root system of the dracaena does not tolerate tightness.

When to transplant dracaena

Young trees are transplanted every year in early spring, since at this time they begin to grow intensively, throwing out new leaves. Mature plants are transplanted as they grow. Sometimes replanting is unnecessary; instead, you can simply replace the top layer of the earth.

Transplanting the dracaena into a new pot must be done carefully.

After purchasing, pay attention to the ratio of the height of the tree to the pot in which it grows. A forty-centimeter plant needs a container with a diameter of at least 20 cm. If the pot is very small, the tree must be transplanted immediately. But you cannot immediately transplant the plant into a very spacious container, otherwise it will die. The new pot should be 3 cm larger than the previous one.

For transplanting you will need: a new clay or ceramic pot, expanded clay, substrate for palm trees. Plastic containers do not allow air and moisture to pass through. If there is no purchased land, you can prepare it yourself by mixing humus, peat and deciduous soil in equal parts. It is good to add a little charcoal. This substrate is loose and nutritious.

Transplant process:

  1. Pour expanded clay on the bottom of the pot. This is necessary so that moisture does not stagnate.
  2. Fill the pot halfway with palm soil.
  3. Carefully remove the plant with a clod of earth. The day before transplanting, you need to stop watering so that the earthen lump dries up a little, so it will be easier to remove it.
  4. If the dracaena has too many long roots, you just need to cut them off. The plant quickly regenerates roots.
  5. Place the dracaena in a new pot, straighten the roots and carefully cover them with soil.

When planting, it is important not to deepen the neck – the transition from the roots to the trunk. It only needs to be sprinkled with earth a little. There is no need to ram the soil, the plant prefers a light, loose substrate through which air and moisture easily get to the roots. On top, you can lay out a layer of expanded clay so that the surface does not dry out. Dracaena needs to be watered with soft, settled water and put in a permanent place.

After transplanting, the plant gets stressed, so it needs to create the most comfortable conditions. Soft diffused light, stable temperature, no drafts, high air humidity – this will help the dracaena to get used to the new pot faster.

Dracaena transplant at home does not require special skills. If you know the basic rules for transplanting indoor plants, you can easily cope with this task.
