Poles evacuated 40 children suffering from oncology from Ukraine

The Polish diplomatic mission, consisting of Consul General Eliza Dzwonkiewicz, Consul Rafał Kocot, Professor of Oncology and Pediatric Surgery Wojciech Młynarski, Dr. Roman Kizyma – Ukrainian oncologist and the Heros Foundation, participated in the evacuation of sick children. The children were looked after by Dr. Paweł Kukiz-Szczuciński, who in 2020 participated in medical missions in covid hospitals in Italy, Tajikistan and Ethiopia.

– I have seen a lot in my life, but the moment we left the hospital in Lviv, the sight of despairing fathers and grandparents saying goodbye to their grandchildren and children will remain in my memory for the rest of my life. These men were aware that they did not know when they would meet their relatives again, especially since some of them were going to the front, but they knew that their relatives were going to a safe place, says Dr. Paweł Kukiz-Szczuciński for PAP.

– The queues to the border are gigantic. Our convoy was piloted by Ukrainian services. In addition, we placed the inscriptions on the bus saying that children are going in it. Thanks to this, the ride ran smoothly. The children took the trip well. When we crossed the Polish-Ukrainian border, you could see tears in their eyes. They knew they were already safe, but they had to leave their homeland, it is not known for how long – says the doctor.

– We received a lot of support from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Polish consulate. Our diplomats deserve great praise. The Polish diplomatic mission is the only one that still works on the spot and participates in the evacuation of the population, including the weakest – children suffering from cancer – he emphasized.

The medic noted that there was no panic in Lviv at the moment, and the city was not paralyzed. – On the other hand, there are anti-aircraft alarms, people have applications informing that it is necessary to go to the shelter, for now these are training alarms. The population is getting ready for a potential attack. There is a fear that the s will enter western Ukraine from the north, from Belarus. You can see that anti-tank fortifications are being built around Lviv. Dams are being built, which indicates that the city’s defense is probably expecting conventional troops, he noted.

– I will definitely come back to Lviv – he announced.
