While further restrictions are being loosened in Poland and the pace of vaccinations is slowing down, Dr. Paweł Grzesiowski draws attention to the situation in Great Britain. What is happening in the UK right now could also apply to any other country.
- Coronavirus infections are rising again in the UK
- This is worrying news given the country’s immunization rate. Over 19 million citizens there received the first dose of the COVID-50 preparation
- The Indian variant, i.e. Delta, is to be responsible for the increase in infections. As Dr. Grzesiowski writes, the problem may also arise in other countries
- More information can be found on the Onet homepage.
A worrying trend in the UK. Large increases in the number of infections
Britain is a country that was hit particularly hard by the second wave of the pandemic. At that time, the British variant was responsible for mass infections (according to the new WHO nomenclature – the Alpha variant). Since then, the situation in the UK has clearly changed for the better. The vaccination program was thriving in the country, and the authorities were loosening further restrictions.
Last week, however, we reported that coronavirus infections are rising again in the UK. During the week, the number of new infections there increased by 18%, which was a worrying result.

We already wrote then that the Indian variant (Delta) is responsible for the situation in Great Britain, which, according to scientists, is up to 50 percent. more contagious than the Alpha madman. On May 31, 3 people were found in Great Britain. 383 new COVID-19 infections.
Dr. Grzesiowski warns. This could be for any other country
Dr. Paweł Grzesiowski published a warning for the whole of Europe on his Twitter account. He also referred to the situation in Great Britain. The immunologist emphasized that the Delta variant begins to dominate the Alpha variant there. The doctor also pointed out that this is not only a problem for the residents of the United Kingdom. The more virulent variant may have a negative impact on the pandemic situation also in other countries.
– A serious warning for Europe – in the UK, variant B.1.617.2 (“Indian”) overcomes the dominance of variant B.1.1.7 (“British”), which means that in any other country it is possible. Re-open schools, more sick children, more virus in a population that is still not immune, wrote the immunologist.
Why is the Indian variant becoming dominant? This is a natural phenomenon
At the moment, we do not know the number of cases of infection with the Indian variant of the coronavirus in Poland. We asked the Ministry of Health to provide such data, but so far we have not received an answer.
- The editorial office recommends: «In Sweden, one person pulls the strings – the chief epidemiologist. I am glad that I do not have the same authority as he »
We do know, however, that when a more virulent variant appears, it begins to displace its less infectious predecessor over time. In turn, the first cases of the Delta variant in Poland were found on May 2.
– It is very typical for all viruses that if more infectious, more virulent variants arise, the original strains will naturally be displaced over time – said Prof. Andrzej Fal, head of the Department of Allergology, Lung Diseases and Internal Diseases at the hospital of the Ministry of Interior and Administration. –New variants take territory, fighting faster for their victim, in this case, for the human. The issue of the emergence of a more infectious variant in a given population makes this variant the dominant one in some time.
What are the symptoms of Indian variant infection?
The Indian variant shows slightly different symptoms than its predecessors. The common point is:
- high fever
- persistent cough
- loss or change in sense of smell and taste
Additionally, in patients infected with the Delta variant, the following is observed:
- sore throat
- headache
- katar
- rash
- upset stomach
- dry mouth
- nausea
- diarrhea
- vomiting
- reddened eyes
