Dr.Fauci: Americans will achieve herd immunity in summer 2021. There are two conditions

According to Dr. Anthony Fauci, U.S. residents may become herd immune to COVID-19 in the summer of 2021. All thanks to the spread of SARS-CoV-2 vaccines. The expert reserves, however, that vaccines alone will not do the trick. What else needs to be done?

  1. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has conditionally approved the COVID-19 vaccine. It is expected to be available for general use in spring 2021
  2. According to Dr Fauci, the challenge will be to convince enough people to vaccinate so that the herd becomes immune in summer 2021

The United States has conditionally approved the COVID-19 vaccine

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the Pfizer / BioNTech vaccine for emergency use among frontline healthcare workers and residents of long-term care facilities. There are plans to introduce general use of this and other tested COVID-19 vaccines in spring 2021.

According to Dr. Fauci, director of the U.S. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, If large-scale vaccination begins in the second quarter of 2021, Americans may be immune to herd by summer. However, there are several conditions that must be met for the goal to be achieved.

How to convince people to vaccinate?

Simply contracting COVID-19 vaccines does not solve the problem of the COVID-19 epidemic. As Dr. Fauci rightly points out, the real challenge will be getting people to get vaccinated and take two doses of the vaccine. The distribution of preparations can also be a logistical challenge, as they have to be stored under certain conditions.

“I believe that if we successfully convince people to vaccinate, we can achieve herd immunity by the end of the second quarter of 2021 – in late spring or early summer” – said Dr. Fauci.

Initially, there was great caution in achieving society’s herd immunity to COVID-19. This immunity means that a population is protected against a virus if the majority of it becomes resistant to a given disease, e.g. through vaccination. Then the minority who for various reasons do not have antibodies to the pathogen in question are also protected and are less likely to catch an infection.

In the case of COVID-19, herd immunity has so far been associated with the controlled spread of infection in order to naturally immunize the population. This approach to the matter was considered unscientific, unethical and ineffective, e.g. because it would result in the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people.

“About 2 million Americans may die if we strive to develop herd immunity … These are the deaths of our loved ones that are preventable and cannot be allowed,” says Dr. Leana Wen, an emergency medicine physician and medical analyst at CNN.

Thanks to the COVID-19 vaccine, it is possible to obtain universal immunity in a controlled manner, without endangering people’s health and life. The vaccine does not cause disease, but it teaches the immune system to “fight” against pathogens.

If Americans gain herd immunity in the summer of 2021, will their lives return to normal immediately? Not exactly. Dr Fauci believes that it will be at least the second half of 2021 before restrictions in the United States are relaxed. He also warns that the COVID-19 vaccine is not a silver bullet against the pandemic.

One of the obstacles to obtaining herd immunity may be the increasing anti-vaccination movements – in the fight against them, reliable and accessible knowledge is a necessary weapon. Zobacz: USA wants to fight vaccine opponents. The government has a lot to do in this regard
