Dom Perignon: an overview of taste and types + how to distinguish a fake

Champagne Dom Perignon entered the market in 1921. It was introduced by the rather well-known French winery Moet & Chandon, which wanted to perpetuate the name of the creator of the wine house in this way.

Dom Perignon is, first of all, an exceptional taste, which, by the way, is always the same (we are talking about the mass market).

More about the drink

Each grape harvest is carefully checked, it must be suitable both in terms of taste and chemical characteristics. We can say that Dom Perignon is an elite drink, the creation of which haste and inaccuracies in preparation are unacceptable.

Another feature of the production of champagne is that the squeezed grape juice is kept in oak barrels for a long time, the exposure is at least 7 years. Well, the whole process of producing a drink takes at least 10 years. In this regard, any wine of the brand, even the youngest, has a deep and indescribable taste.

Types and features of Dom Perignon

Three types of Dom Pérignon champagne are produced:

  1. Dom Pérignon Rose Vintage

Dry champagne, brut. The color is sparkling, pink with a slight perlage.

The taste is rich, it combines notes of raspberry, orange peel and pickled ginger. The composition is complemented by tones of smoke and brioche buns.

A long aftertaste endows with an exquisite berry palette.

In a multifaceted aroma, the smells of red currant, oranges, strawberries, cocoa and hay are intertwined.

Excellent aperitif. Sparkling wine perfectly complements poultry and fish dishes, and also goes well with red berries.

  2. Dom Pérignon Vintage

Champagne light golden color with a straw tint.

The expressive taste combines apricot-pear accents, fresh citrus tones and mineral accords.

In a long tart aftertaste, mineral touches and juiciness of citrus fruits are perceptible.

The rich fragrant composition is dominated by peach nuances, complemented by hints of pears, freshly baked buns, almonds and citrus fruits.

The drink is used as an aperitif. Good in the company of fish dishes, cold appetizers and desserts.

  3. Dom Perignon P2

    White champagne, brut.

The taste has a silky texture and persistent perlage, has a moderate sourness, and a slight bitterness is inherent.

Opens with notes of licorice & freshly baked bread crust.

In the bright aroma of the drink there are tones of brioche, spicy bergamot and apricot, which stand out against the background of smoky shades.

Combines with fried artichokes, sea bass, grilled vegetables, black caviar.

How to spot a fake Dom Perignon

Here are some tips on how to distinguish real Dom Perignon champagne from a fake:

  1. Sparkling wine has not only a unique taste, but also a unique label, which can rightly be called the most famous in the world – its design is made in the form of a knight’s shield.

  2. The label indicates the year of harvest and the grape variety from which the drink is made.

  3. The labels on the bottle are glued evenly, without smudges. The inscriptions on the label are spelled out correctly, without errors.

  4. Champagne is often bottled in bottles of 0,75 liters, but there are exceptions if the wine is collectible, gift or released on significant dates. In such cases, you can find an exclusive bottle of one and a half, 3 or 6 liters.

  5. The cork is made of cork material, fixed with a metal protection. Every detail has branded elements.

  6. Don’t forget the barcode. On a genuine bottle, you can see the numbers from “30” to “37”, but most often “31”. This suggests that the champagne is produced in France. Otherwise, you have a fake.

  7. The price of the drink is above average, it belongs to a number of elite ones.

Before buying Dom Perignon champagne, study the bottle well in order to purchase only high-quality original goods.
