We know that we can wear disposable masks until they get wet and then throw them away. Reusable fabric masks, which can be reused after washing, are different. But for how long? Does the cloth mask have a specific use-by date?
- In Poland, citizens are now required to cover their mouth and nose with a mask. Chimneys, scarves, scarves or helmets are now unacceptable
- However, there is no specific requirement for the type of mask. Surgical or better are recommended, but a cloth mask can also be worn
- Such a mask is not a one-time use. This does not mean, however, that it can be worn without restrictions and with proper care

Does each cloth mask protect the same?
The manufacturer’s description can explain a lot. In the case of a reusable mask, it usually reads as follows: “The product is not a medical device or personal protective equipment. It is intended for personal use only. The manufacturer does not guarantee any medical benefits resulting from the use of the product ”. The more witty manufacturers in the description of their products use the slogan: “Protects against the mandate”.

In the world, textile masks are not CE marked or subject to compliance assessments with the standards that apply to medical masks. However, with the emergence of the British, more infectious, variant of the coronavirus, there are voices that they should be attached to labels indicating the level of filtering or the category whose requirements they meet.
If there is no label – and this is the case with reusable fabric masks – we have no guarantee as to the level of filtration. Additionally, the label of the mask, according to the specifications of the category, should indicate the number of times it can be washed before disposal.
The problem with cloth masks is that their level of protection largely depends on the type of material, the number of layers and the craftsmanship of the manufacturer. Standardization institutes in some countries are working to define minimum criteria that non-medical masks should meet. This is the case, for example, in France and Spain. However, there are no standards that would define these criteria. There are also no research methods that would verify their quality.
Does the cloth mask have an expiry date? How to take care of it?
Regardless of whether fabric masks are manufactured industrially or hand-sewn, they require proper care to ensure their durability and functionality. Although they do not have an expiry date, they will wear out with normal use and will need to be replaced over time.
The conditions in which it is stored have a decisive influence on the condition of the mask. Due to the elastic band, it should not lie in places where the packaging can get hot. Direct exposure to the sun also has a negative effect on the eraser. However, the fabric should be thoroughly dried before putting it in a plastic bag, otherwise it may start to mold or rot.
