Can a person with hypothyroidism have mental problems?

Good day. My name is Marcin. Recently, my wife and I visited a doctor who diagnosed her with hypothyroidism. However, I’m not entirely sure if he was wrong. When they watch my wife on a daily basis, she gives the impression that she is depressed. He can sleep and wake up all day without any desire to live. Sometimes I try to hug her at night because I want to get close to her, but then she pushes me away and says she doesn’t want to. We are a young couple. We got married less than 3 years ago and for a long time, also during the engagement stage, everything was fine.

The wife has always been a cheerful, smiling girl. She has never had any mental problems, although she is a very sensitive person. Please explain to me if it is true people suffering from hypothyroidism can they behave this way? Does the hypothyroidism mentioned have psychological symptoms? Are there any specific issues associated with hypothyroidism? mental disorders? Is behavior like my wife’s “normal”?

I know he is very upset about it. Thank you in advance for your factual answer and any sources from which I could learn more about hypothyroidism.

The doctor explains the symptoms of hypothyroidism

Dear sir, let me start by saying that the thyroid gland produces two basic hormones that are responsible for metabolism, these are thyroxine and triiodothyronine. They are responsible for regulating the functions of most tissues of the human body. In the case of hypothyroidism, the concentration of these hormones is reduced, which is manifested by a slower metabolism. Please remember that hypothyroidism is the most common thyroid dysfunction and affects approximately 5% of adult women.

The disease can manifest itself in many ways, the most common symptoms are a feeling of constant cold, weight gain, slow heart rate with a drop in blood pressure, constipation and even infertility. Importantly, hypothyroidism can also cause psychological symptoms, in particular chronic fatigue, depressive symptoms, memory disorders and anxiety disorders.

Your wife’s symptoms may be due to an underactive thyroid gland, especially if she was diagnosed late. In this case, treatment consists of substitution treatment. Symptoms should disappear after the hormonal balance has been compensated for. However, if this does not happen, it may indicate another reason for your wife’s health. In such a situation, the wife should see a psychiatrist who, if necessary, will recommend appropriate treatment. Most often, it is recommended to use antidepressants, which can be supplemented with psychotherapy.
