Does having one child with autism make the next one likely to be sick as well?

The published studies clearly show that when there is one child in the family diagnosed with autism, the probability of having another child with this disorder increases and amounts to 8-15%. But even if one of the monozygotic twins is diagnosed with autism, that doesn’t mean the other will also be diagnosed with autism, although of course the likelihood is much higher than with the siblings.

In recent years, the scientific literature often uses the terms “broader phenotype of autism” or “lighter variant of autism”. These concepts apply to relatives of people with autism spectrum disorders, especially to parents who exhibit certain behaviors characteristic of pervasive developmental disorders. However, these behaviors are not so severe that these people can be diagnosed with ASD. The most frequently mentioned difficulties of parents and relatives of people with pervasive development disorders in this area include a certain “clumsiness” in social interactions, weaker recognition of emotions, a tendency to routines, lack of flexibility, poor tolerance of sudden changes of plans.
