The radiation doses used in computed tomography are much higher than those needed to take a single X-ray image, and as we know, X-ray radiation is not indifferent to health. It increases the risk of mutations within DNA, which affects the development of various types of cancer.
Of course, a single CT scan is not very important for our health, but a larger number of tests at short intervals may already have an impact on our body. In case of CT examinations with contrast besides radiation itself, contrast is a concern. It has many side effects. It is especially dangerous for people who are allergic to contrast, because it can even lead to death. Contrast is also contraindicated in people with renal insufficiency as it can exacerbate the condition.
Of course, the severity of the side effects varies, so they can be divided into light, medium and severe. The most common side effects are mild. These include nausea and vomiting, itching, hives, hoarseness, sneezing and hot flushes. The moderate side effects include facial swelling, bronchospasm, extensive hives, and laryngeal edema.
Appropriate treatment is required for this group of side effects, but they are not life-threatening. The most serious side effects are shock, convulsions, cardiac arrest or respiratory arrest. They require immediate treatment as they are health and life threatening.
