What are the side effects of contrast tomography?

Hello. My dad (64) suspects a brain tumor. For this reason, it was directed to computed tomography of the head with contrastto be able to detect neoplastic changes. Overall, my dad and I are terrified. We never thought that someone in our family would meet this. The worst thing is that Dad refuses to undergo contrast CT scans. While in the hospital, some other patient told my dad that the contrast scan had side effects.

It seemed to me to be a fairly safe test. Please let me know if it really is contrast tomography has side effects? Is it dangerous to health? If so, what side effects may occur after contrast tomography? Dad is not young, he is quite sick and I would prefer that he would not suffer health problems again. Reading various comments, I myself wonder if it is a safe examination for my dad. Please answer my questions. We are faced with a difficult choice, I would not like to hurt my dad. I hope the contrast scan will be safe for my dad. Veronica.

The doctor explains the effect of contrast tomography on health

Ladies and Gentlemen, I always advise patients to discuss any doubts related to tests or surgeries with a doctor and not with lay people and outsiders. It is definitely not worth looking for information on various forums, doctors rarely comment there.

When it comes to computed tomography itself, you need to know the mechanism of its operation. CT examination uses X-ray radiation for imaging the inside of the body. The radiation doses used in computed tomography are much higher than those needed to take a single X-ray image, and as we know, X-ray radiation is not indifferent to health. It increases the risk of mutations within DNA, which affects the development of various types of cancer.

Of course, a single CT scan is not very important for our health, but a larger number of tests at short intervals may already have an impact on our body. In case of CT examinations with contrast besides radiation itself, contrast is a concern. It has many side effects. It is especially dangerous for people who are allergic to contrast, because it can even lead to death. Contrast is also contraindicated in people with renal insufficiency as it can exacerbate the condition.

Of course, the severity of the side effects varies, so they can be divided into light, medium and severe. The most common side effects are mild. These include nausea and vomiting, itching, hives, hoarseness, sneezing and hot flushes. The moderate side effects include facial swelling, bronchospasm, extensive hives, and laryngeal edema.

Appropriate treatment is required for this group of side effects, but they are not life-threatening. The most serious side effects are shock, convulsions, cardiac arrest or respiratory arrest. They require immediate treatment as they are health and life threatening.
