We all know that wine comes in red, white and rosé. But few people know about the existence of blue. Its taste is very unusual, and the color seems impossible at all. When I first saw it, I thought it was some kind of another chemistry that had nothing to do with the original drink, but it turned out to be wrong.
Examples of blue wine
Perhaps the most famous blue wine was created in France a few years ago.
It is called Vindigo and has a pale blue color.
It is known that it is made on the basis of the usual Chardonnay. Its strength is 11%.
There are other varieties of blue, including sparkling ones: Blanc de Bleu Cuvee Mousseux Brut (11%), Platino Blue Moscato (7%), Aviva Blue Sky (5,5%), Vega Cristina Blue Moscato (7%) and Chardonnay Noite Longa Azul (12%).
In fact, there are many more. It’s hard to even count. I have mentioned only the most famous ones.
Why is it blue
It’s worth starting with the history of this unusual drink. In fact, experts do not consider it a real wine, because some of its types have added artificial dye E132. Others contain natural anthocyanin.
So, the idea arose in 2015 in Spain. Six people decided to make a revolution in winemaking.
Their first wine drink of such a non-trivial color was tinted with blueberry juice. The enthusiasts did not stop there, wanting to do something fundamentally new and much more unusual.
After a couple of years of trial and error, they released a real sky blue wine. They explained their actions by the fact that they simply wanted to break the canons and see what would come of it. As a result, the product from their company “Gik live” aroused genuine interest and began to be supplied to 25 countries.
Two years later, the Frenchman Rene Le Bay improved it and called it Vindigo. The taste has become better: lightness and a pleasant aftertaste have appeared, and the chemical dye has been replaced with a natural one. Further, completely different companies began to experiment with production. Now on sale you can find many options: from bright turquoise to deep blue.
Vindigo, as already mentioned, is made from a grape variety called Chardonnay. Berries are passed through a gruel made from the skins of red grapes rich in blue dye.
Other varieties are made in the same way. True, each manufacturer adds something of his own to the composition: blueberries, blackberries, blueberries, etc. And the Gik live company, for example, also sweetened its drink, although this is considered bad manners in winemaking.
The peak of popularity of heavenly chardonnay was at the time of its discovery. It was kind of a sensation. Over time, interest in him began to fade. But then came the 2020 quarantine. Photos with unusual drinks have become very popular on Instagram, and on this wave everyone again remembered blue wine.
My impressions
Personally, I liked the drink. True, it is very sweet, even cloying. But I like it.
Notes of berries and fruits are felt. Peaches, apples, lychees and much more are often added there. The smell is also very fruity, while pleasant and mild.
But experts say that it is only suitable as an additive for cocktails. It can surprise guests at a party, but few will enjoy drinking it on an ongoing basis. Still, he lacks that rich aftertaste that everyone is used to.
And yet I think that everyone should try the blue wine drink. At least once in a lifetime.
