Why does the tooth hurt after the filling is in place? Does a toothache after a filling always mean something is wrong? Does this mean that the dentist made a mistake? Should the pain after placing the seal be waived? The question is answered by the drug. Katarzyna Darecka.

Does the pain after putting the seal on mean something bad?

Hello. Four days ago I was founded filling on the teeth. Due to the change of place of residence, it was the first time I had to go to a different dentist than I used to. I chose an office that had good reviews on the internet, the dentist was nice, everything seemed professional. After the inspection, it turned out that I had a cavity in one tooth and it was necessary placing the seal. I came to the office, asked for anesthesia, everything was great.

The dentist put a filling on me, I felt nothing because of the anesthesia. Also, when I ran my tongue over, the filling was even. The next day I woke up with pain in a sealed tooth. I thought it might be normal the next day, but as the pain persisted in the following days, I started to get anxious. Whether toothache after filling means something is wrong? Could it be that the dentist made a mistake somewhere? Or maybe such pains happen and I should be patient and wait somehow on painkillers? Please help.

The doctor explains what to do in the case of toothache after filling

Toothache after filling can occur normally, without concomitant pathologies. However, if the pain is very intense or there are also other symptoms, such as fever, redness, swelling, contact your dentist as soon as possible.

There can be many causes of toothache after filling, but the most common is tooth hypersensitivity, especially when consuming warm and cold food or drinks (e.g. ice cream, coffee, tea), sweet foods, and foods and drinks that show high acidity, e.g. juices, fruit , coffee. Hypersensitivity pain may also appear due to pressure on the seal when biting. Usually, the pain resulting from hypersensitivity disappears after a few weeks at the latest, but if the pain persists despite the past time, go to the dentist with the problem. Post-filling hypersensitivity results from irritation of the nerve in the area of the tooth on which the procedure was performed.

The cause of toothache after filling it can also be a slit or slots in the seal or too loose filling and its inaccurate fit on the tooth. Gaps may form as a result of a loose seal. If it is suspected that the cause of toothache is this, go to the dentist with the problem.

Another, less common, cause may be an allergic reaction to the material the seal is made of, such as silver. In order to prevent this, if we are aware of any allergies, we should inform the dentist about them before the procedure. This also applies to allergies to local anesthetics.

To prevent pain, avoid cold and warm food after filling, use hypersensitive toothpaste, use delicate brushes when brushing your teeth and gently sweep your teeth with a brush, and also gently when brushing your teeth with a thread. If the pain is particularly troublesome, you can use over-the-counter painkillers, such as Ibuprofen or Paracetamol, or use an anesthetic ointment for the sore area, intended for use inside the mouth.
