At two years old you know letters, by three you can read, at four you can write in English. It seems that parents are literally obsessed with the idea of early development — as well as with raising a recognized genius from a child. Only now, will the children themselves say thank you for this? Director Elena Pogrebizhskaya shares her thoughts.
I was sent to school at the age of five. Literally a month later, I turned six, but at home no one thought in this direction. We, my parents and I, liked to think it was five, almost four. In this way, some especially smart child appeared with my parents, and I liked to think this way to myself for a few more years — exactly until I got different unpleasant triplets. Which finally made me an ordinary person. Fortunately, my parents literally immediately stopped placing any excessive hopes on me and were distracted by themselves, so consider me lucky.
Apart from this episode, no one else decided for me where I should go and what tendencies to develop. No one expected records from me and did not try to win their “failed prizes” with my hands. Otherwise, everything in my life would not have turned out the way it is, but somehow sadder.
It became clear to me that my friend Masha was a little moved when it turned out that she was seriously teaching her daughter to read. Despite the fact that the girl has not yet spoken. The refrigerator and the kitchen walls were now covered with letters. The mother poked her finger at the letter and repeated to the one-year-old girl: «MMMEEEE, BBBBEEEE.» The daughter looked blankly at her mother, but did not resist.
And Masha decided that she would raise a brilliant child at any cost. She even almost had a nervous breakdown once. She was terribly tired: by the time her daughter was two, Masha had already left the decree and was working. She rushed from Moscow work to her distant suburbs and did not go to bed for a long time: she had to cut out cards for classes with the child the next day, prepare pictures and tasks.
Masha claimed that a smart child begins to read immediately with words. And, bypassing the syllables, I decided to train my child to read words. As a result, my daughter, of course, learned to read. At four. Because it is clear: for a mother, this is a matter of life and death, but the child is not a monster, so I had to.
Masha is an example of a person who himself could not realize himself in life and decided at any cost to create a genius from his child
I must say that I was taught to read at the age of four. And a few of my friends also read during those same four years, but our parents did not squeeze this skill out of us. One friend’s mother did not even know that her daughter was reading: she was taught by her older sister — just like that, for the sake of entertainment. And none of us thought it made us special. They were probably fools.
Masha, on the other hand, carried tons of books on art and reproductions of paintings home for her little daughter, because she had to understand painting. Then came the turn of the music.
God forbid you say anything to Masha: they say, maybe leave the baby alone? Maybe somehow not so zealously to form it? Maybe let her have some free time?
And the most terrible words for our mother will be: “And if the girl doesn’t like it?” Masha will bring down on you all the bitterness of a person who himself could not realize himself in life and decided at any cost to create a genius from his child. For all your unfulfilled dreams, for all your failed education. Machine’s husband, of course, does not argue with her.
English letters are another cool height for a child, a record that can be sent to relatives via viber
At first it seemed to me that Masha was so alone. Until my sister started sending a video of her two-year-old son, in which little Danka adds up the numbers. He counts as big, and counts back as even better, going from ten to one. Yes, not just like that, but in English. After all, you won’t surprise anyone with the Russian countdown.
At the age of two, Danya draws hares that look like real ones, with a tail and paws. The drawing looks like an adult took the baby’s hand and moved it, but the adults swear they didn’t. Of course, this cannot be verified.
Danka’s family lives in 30 square meters, and mom and dad «decorated» the whole wall with Latin letters. The child has learned all the letters of the English alphabet and is ready to show them while the grandmother takes him on the phone. English letters are another cool height for a child, a record that can be sent to relatives via viber. Moreover, the child does not speak his native Russian, he is still small for this. And, by the way, what he will do next with English letters is not entirely clear, because neither mom nor dad speak English in order to develop this skill.
But they will definitely come up with some other cool height for the kid, so that later they can send it to everyone via viber.
I have a friend. He was a very talented violinist boy who achieved real great success in world music. He is one of those whom the whole country considered a miracle child. Now, as an adult, he can’t stand his mother, who taught him music all those endless hours, days and years. Literally hates her for her childhood taken away and for the fact that she made a trained monkey out of him, she never wants to talk about her childhood with anyone.
I think at five he also did not argue with his mother and pretended that he liked to live with a violin in his hand, while others were just children.
