Patients with COVID-19 symptoms are accompanied by an average of more than 30 symptoms of the disease. As it turns out, this list is not exhaustive. Spanish scientists have identified new early symptoms of SARS-CoV-2 infection. They appear in the mouth, palms or soles of the feet.
- Researchers at the Universitario La Paz hospital in Madrid identified three new symptoms of COVID-19 infection
- One in four patients (25%) developed changes in the tongue: swelling, inflammation, burning
- Changes in the hands and / or soles of the feet were reported by 40 percent. patients participating in the study. They were burning, redness, peeling, and spots

New COVID-19 symptoms. What did the Spanish study show?
According to the indications of the World Health Organization, the most common symptoms of COVID-19 are: fever, dry cough and fatigue. Less common symptoms include headache, sore throat, nasal congestion, red eyes, diarrhea, skin rash, loss of smell or taste. In November 2020, scientists from the Society of Family Physicians of Spain (SEMG) reported the results of studies conducted between July and October 2020. Based on them, it was found that one person with symptoms of COVID-19 has an average of 36 different symptoms of the disease.
According to their observations, the most common symptom is fatigue, and general malaise. Other common symptoms in people with COVID-19 were headache, lethargy, muscle aches, and shortness of breath. A significant percentage of people with COVID-19 symptoms reported changes in the nervous system and psychological complications, including difficulty concentrating, feeling anxious, and temporary memory deficiencies.

As it turns out, the list of symptoms of coronavirus infection is still open. And three more symptoms have just been identified – they affected the mouth, hands, and soles of the feet. A few days ago, scientists from the Universitario La Paz hospital in Madrid informed about them. The study was conducted in April on over 600 patients of a hospital set up at Madrid’s IFEMA Convention and Exhibition Center. The results were published in the prestigious scientific journal “British Journal of Dermatology”.
Mouth: “covid tongue”, inflammation, burning
What exactly were the medical scientists observing? One in four patients (25%) developed changes in the tongue. The most common diagnosis was transient U-shaped papillitis, sometimes accompanied by a swollen tongue. Patients also reported aphthous stomatitis, mucositis or glossitis, burning sensation in the mouth. In many cases, it was associated with a loss of taste.

Doctors from Great Britain also drew attention to the changes in the oral cavity. Recently, prof. Tim Spector, an epidemiologist at King’s College, London, reported disturbing observations. More and more COVID-19 patients have developed unusual mouth ulcers, including a swollen tongue that has red and white patches. This symptom has been dubbed “covid language” (it is an informal term, at present there is no medical definition for it).

Similar symptoms had been identified before. Last June, a team of scientists from the UK singled out three coronavirus patients who developed mouth ulcers or blisters (the study was published in the journal Nature).
Why does SARS-CoV-2 infection manifest in the mouth? Suspected to be a coronavirus-sensitive area. This is due to the large number of ACE2 receptors, which, as it were, open the door to the cells of our body for the pathogen.
It is believed that “covid language” is not related to the severity of the course of COVID-19 and can be cured within a week. It is important to remember that mouth ulcers in themselves are not a symptom of coronavirus infection. “People shouldn’t panic over a one-time occurrence of this symptom,” reminds weather.com.
Palms and soles of the feet: burning, peeling, spots
To the “covid language” there are also changes to the hands or soles of the feet. Patients have reported burning and redness in these parts of the body, in some cases followed by peeling of the skin or characteristic small patches.
Such symptoms were reported by an average of four out of 10 hospital patients in IFEMA. – Almost half of the people with mild or moderate course of COVID-19 admitted to the field hospital over a two-week period, showed dermal and mucosal changes – says Dr. Almudena Nuno-Gonzalez, who leads the study.
Skin lesions related to COVID-19 infection are not surprising, they have been diagnosed before, but so far they have not been taken into account in the palmar-plantar area.
- The rash could be a symptom of the coronavirus. What should be worrying? [WE EXPLAIN]
While rash is one of the less common symptoms of COVID-19, scientists emphasize that they may play a key role in detecting infections in asymptomatic people. The rash may be the only noticeable sign of the presence of SARS-CoV-2 in the body.
Dermatologists talk about three main types of changes associated with SARS-CoV-2: urticaria, erythematous-papular rash and erythematous-vesicular rash (there are also macular lesions).
- Reddish-purple spots, blisters. What are “covid fingers”?
Collecting the study, the researchers emphasized that the symptoms observed in the study could be ‘the key to early diagnosis of COVID-19’.
