Doctors explain how much we should sleep

Doctors looked at the link between sleep duration and the risk of serious diseases such as heart attacks and strokes. It turned out that how many hours we sleep have a big impact on the formation of atherosclerotic plaque in the arteries. What is the optimal sleep duration?

Sleep duration and health

During sleep, the body regenerates, but our psyche also rests. It is very important for our immunity, physical performance and well-being. Most of us nowadays complain of a lack of sleep. But scientists and doctors warn that excess of it is not good for us either.

How it’s possible? During research, cardiologists found that people who sleep more than eight hours a night may notice an increased amount of plaque in their veins and arteries. When the arteries are not open, the risk of heart attack and stroke increases. Interestingly, the researchers found the same tendency in people who sleep less than six hours a night.

Doctors have no doubts that the optimal length of sleep for a human is 7-8 hours a day.
