In May, 17-year-old Leah Rogers went on her first vacation with friends to Majorca. “The Sun” reports that when she returned, she began to feel worse, and the doctors said that she had tonsillitis and gave her antibiotics. The medications, however, did not help. When her health deteriorated, Leah was hospitalized, and the doctors diagnosed her with glandular fever, i.e. mononucleosis. The teenager’s family also heard that the girl suffers from liver failure.

They diagnosed her with tonsillitis. A few weeks later she died

The 17-year-old was transferred to the intensive care unit and connected to breathing apparatus. Finally, another diagnosis was made. Leah suffered from a rare disease called haemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis. A life-threatening immune state is caused by a build-up of white blood cells in the organs when the immune system is not working properly. Leah’s condition gradually deteriorated. Doctors informed the patient’s family that she would probably not survive another night. The teenager died on June 7.

The teen’s family is devastated. Leah’s father revealed that the daughter, who was planning to become a nurse in the future, was full of life and had an extraordinary sense of humor.

It all happened so suddenly and our lives will never be the same again. It has left a huge void in our hearts that can never be replaced. (…) We just can’t understand it. We all think it’s just a bad dream that one day we’ll wake up and she’ll be there

the father of the deceased 17-year-old confessed.

Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) is a severe, life-threatening inflammation caused by an immune disorder. The first illness, but also reactivation of HLH, are caused by an infection (usually viral). Haemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis may be congenital or acquired. The most common symptoms are fever, cytopenia and splenomegaly, or enlargement of the spleen. These symptoms are not specific to HLH, so it is difficult to diagnose the disease. Patients are also often accompanied by abnormalities in liver function and neurological disorders. The disease affects people of all ages.
