It would seem that office work, with a computer and a pile of documents, is comfortable and safe. Nothing more wrong! People who spend most of the day in a sedentary position and perform the same monotonous activities are at risk of many diseases. A much healthier form of spending most of the day is working on the move. What are the risks of sedentary work?

Even minor ailments caused by staying in one position for a long time cannot be ignored, because each of them can turn into a more serious disease. In many offices, factors that further complicate matters are poor lighting and uncomfortable chairs, as well as air conditioning and exposure to radiation. All this can result in back pain, injuries and overloads, pain in the wrists and eyes. Mainly because of the widespread use of computers, office work is not good for your health. Currently, it is referred to as “the occupational disease of the future”, as more and more people complain about such ailments as:

  • calf swelling,
  • Headaches, eye, nose, throat pains,
  • not feeling well,
  • Elbow and wrist problems.

Of course, one of the most common problems is back pain, most often in the cervical and lumbar regions. Too few breaks, or their neglect, contributes to it, because the reason for back pain is primarily staying in one position. Always remember to take a walk from time to time and stretch your bones. Neglected back pain can radiate to other parts of the body, causing tingling, numbness and sensory disturbances.

Working in the office cause varicose veins and eye diseases

Tingling and numbness in the calves can alert you to varicose veins. Especially when there are problems with walking, as well as leg weakness. Varicose veins appear most often on the legs and can cause swelling, calf muscle cramps and dry skin. It is an irreversible, progressive and unfortunately not very aesthetically pleasing disease.

Working at the computer is also the cause of eye diseases. This happens as a result of computer radiation, as well as its improper setting, poor lighting, long staring at the screen. Then there is bloodshot eyes, redness, burning and pinching. This may be accompanied by a feeling of drowsiness and fatigue. Visual disturbances are already a very dangerous symptom, but no matter what, you should protect your eyes from radiation.

How to avoid these diseases?

Employees must be provided with comfortable, adjustable chairs. Preferably swivel and equipped with lockable wheels. The monitor should be placed sideways to the light source, 40-75 cm from the line of eyes. It is also necessary to take care of the introduction of mandatory breaks, which are used to take a short walk. Employees are also recommended to take care of their physical condition – practicing general fitness sports, such as Nordic walking, cycling, swimming or gymnastics.
