Do you have to sweat while exercising?

Assessing the effectiveness of the training carried out through the prism of the amount of sweat released during its duration is a mistake made by many more or less systematically exercising people. Also, the degree of fatigue should not be treated as an indicator of the effectiveness of the exercises performed. Why? Because if we were guided by this principle, stretching exercises and training, including yoga, would not lead to any changes in the body, and as you know, it is not. Unfortunately, many people, especially those who use physical activity in the fight against overweight and obesity, assume that the more they get tired and sweat during training, the more unnecessary fat they will ‘burn’. However, it is worth remembering that sweat is a consequence of increased muscle work and in no case affects the effectiveness of the exercises.

When do we sweat?

Energy is essential for the proper functioning of the body. The vast majority of it is formed in the mitochondria. However, it should be emphasized that only 20-25 percent of the resulting energy is used by the body. Its remaining part is converted into heat through biochemical changes. Too high core body temperature is very dangerous. Hence, there is a defense mechanism in the human body that prevents the body from overheating, namely sweating.

Why do we sweat during training?

During strenuous physical activity, such as training, the body, and especially the muscles, requires a large amount of energy to perform the planned physical exercises. As a result, energy processes intensify, and thus the amount of heat released also increases. To prevent overheating, the human body tries to remove excess heat in various ways. For this purpose, it first uses the so-called convection and radiation phenomena. Unfortunately, the above mechanisms have their drawbacks – they remove excess heat only at low ambient temperatures (below 35 ° C) and in conditions of increased air movement around the body. Hence, under unfavorable environmental conditions, the body uses sweating to remove excess heat.

Why am I not sweating during training?

The prevailing weather conditions mainly affect the amount of sweat secreted by the body during training. The most important factors include temperature, humidity and air movement. The amount of sweat excreted by the body during training carried out at low temperature will be lower than if the same training was carried out at a temperature of 30 ° C. Air humidity is also of great importance – the higher it is, the more sweat will be released during training. Air movement also affects sweating. In windless weather, the body produces more sweat than during training performed in conditions of increased air movement. It is worth remembering that such windless conditions prevail in closed rooms, for example in gyms or fitness clubs.

Is training without sweat effective?

Losing liters of sweat during training does not mean that the exercises performed during training will bring measurable benefits. This effect means, above all, that the training was performed with high or very high intensity in unfavorable weather conditions. Also, a high level of fatigue during and after training does not mean that the exercises performed during it will bring the desired results. It is worth remembering that the effectiveness of training is primarily influenced by the selection of optimal training methods and means, adequate to the currently implemented training goal.
