Covid nails – what do they look like?

Prof. Tim Spector is a British pest related to the Zoe COVID Symptom Study App, collecting data from people who have contracted COVID-19. The sick and convalescents voluntarily provide information about their symptoms during and after their illness there. On this basis, Spector distinguished another symptom related to the infection – these are covid nails.

– Do your nails look weird? Asked a professor at King’s College in London on his Twitter account. – We recognize covid nails more and more often because they regenerate after infection and the growth leaves a clear furrow. They can occur without a skin rash and seem harmless – he added, picturing the entry with a photo of covid nails.

Transverse furrows, i.e. Beau’s lines, appear on the nails of people who have contracted the coronavirus. They indicate that the body has experienced severe physiological stress, such as illness. In such a situation, a change in the nail growth cycle may occur. Beau’s lines usually appear on all nails, sometimes even on the toes.

Dermatologist Dr. Doris Day in an interview with Health.com emphasizes that such changes on nails do not appear immediately after COVID-19. In order for the furrows to become visible, it takes an average of two to three months.

Beau’s lines can appear in people suffering from chronic diseases, those who have just had a serious disease, but also as a result of restrictive diets.

Covid nails are not the same as covid toes

Covid nails are a new symptom indicative of coronavirus infection. Earlier, experts also reported another symptom in the hands and feet – covid fingers. These, however, are something completely different. They are characterized by red or even purple skin and swelling.

The symptoms of covid fingers may resemble frostbite. They are more common in children and adolescents than in adults. Moreover, it happens that they are the only symptom of coronavirus infection. These changes may persist even for several dozen days.

Doctors from Poland also see Covid fingers, as evidenced by a photo posted on Twitter by Maria Kłosińska – a family doctor from Warsaw.
