Do you have a headache on a hot day? The doctor warns: the pill is a bad idea

Hot days are a real survival school for our body. However, high temperature not only affects the thermoregulation mechanism and makes us tire faster. It can also cause a variety of ailments, including severe headache. However, the easiest way to deal with it, which is to take a painkiller, is not a very good idea. Why is this the case and where to look for an alternative, suggests prof. dr hab. med. Krzysztof J. Filipiak, cardiologist, internist and hypertensiologist.

  1. People struggling with chronic diseases and cardiological problems are primarily exposed to the negative effects of heat.
  2. Taking pills for a heat-induced headache should not be our first choice, although it is worth being vigilant, because the ailment may be a harbinger of more serious health problems
  3. According to the expert, the most important thing is prevention, i.e. avoiding sunlight, hydrating and reaching for healthy, easily digestible food products

Expert: “let’s not trivialize headaches”

The heat is a challenge for most of us. Children, seniors and people struggling with chronic diseases and cardiological problems are most exposed to their negative effects. However, a headache can make it difficult even for a healthy person who has not struggled with health problems so far. Moreover, it may be the first harbinger of serious disturbances in the body’s work.

– Let’s not trivialize headaches – warns prof. dr hab. med. Krzysztof J. Filipiak. – Their causes can be very different – from an increase in blood pressure to the beginning of overheating, i.e. heat stroke – he adds.

According to an expert Pain medications are not a good solution in this case. A much better idea is to reach for natural methods, available “on the spot”.

– First, let’s try to properly cool down, hydrate, measure your temperature, heart rate, blood pressure. If something bothers us, it is worth seeking medical advice. Especially people with chronic diseases should be careful about the regularity of taking medications. It is very important – he emphasizes.

Can you prevent headache?

We know how to act when the pain appears, but it does not mean that with this type of ailments we are always in a loser position. If the cause of the headache is high temperature and the associated unfavorable biomet, we can introduce certain habits that prepare the body to face this challenge.

Prof. dr hab. Krzysztof J. Filipiak, MD:

We should avoid high sunlight, spend time in the shade, in shaded apartments, preferably when we have air-conditioned rooms at our disposal, even for a few hours during the day.

The most important thing is to hydrate properly. As a rule, we are talking about the need for an adult to drink two liters of water a day, and in hot weather we add one more liter. It really is physiologists argue that we should consume water in the amount of 30 milliliters for every kilogram of the body. It is easy to calculate that for a solidly built man like me, it is already three liters of water a day. Remember that it is supposed to be water and not other sweetened, alcoholised or carbonated drinks.

It is also worth keeping a proper diet. 90 percent of fruit and vegetables. consist of water, contain essential minerals, vitamins. So let’s remember about such a vegan, light meal in these hot weather.

On hot days, it is worth reaching for healthy, easily digestible snacks, e.g. energy bars with the addition of nuts, flakes, almonds or dried fruit. You will find them in Medonet Market.
