Do you suffer from “eternal” fatigue and depression? It could be a symptom of a long covid
Experts have listed five warning signs that may indicate the development of long COVID.
- Chronic, long-term fatigue. This symptom may indicate a long-term covid. It also dominates the BA.5 mutation as one of the most common first symptoms of infection with a new sub-variant.
- Brain fog. Do you have problems with your memory, brain “blackout”, confusion, distraction? Such problems may be symptoms of a protracted illness. According to experts, even mild COVID-19 can cause inflammation in the brain that disrupts brain cells and can contribute to cognitive decline and other neurological symptoms.
- Depression. Research shows that patients can suffer from depression and anxiety for up to one year after being infected with COVID-19. Many people experience some type of anxiety during a pandemic, but people with COVID-19 have a much higher risk of mental health disorders.
- Loss of taste and smell. This is a symptom that was very characteristic at the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic and is now slightly less common. Still, millions of sufferers experience changes in their sense of taste and smell after contracting COVID-19. These senses are an important part of our lives, and their disturbance is especially felt while eating. Problems with regaining taste and smell often lead to patients’ social isolation and a sense of detachment from the world they knew. It is a nagging symptom that makes everyday functioning difficult.
- Sleep disturbance. Insomnia and other sleep disorders are symptoms that are very often reported by patients with long covid. Sick people, despite fatigue, cannot sleep, they also have disturbances in the circadian rhythm.

Long Covid examined. Symptoms may appear up to two years after infection
According to one of the latest studies, which concerned people with long covid, published in the magazine “The Lancet”, as much as 55 percent. patients still had at least one symptom of COVID-19 two years after infection. This was an improvement over the first six months after infection, when 68 percent. of them watched symptoms.
Researchers analyzed data from 1192 people who were hospitalized at Jin Yin-tan Hospital in Wuhan, China, and were discharged between January 7 and May 29, 2020.
Two years after infection, study participants were in poorer health. Those who continued to experience COVID-19 symptoms most frequently cited pain, fatigue, sleep problems, and mental health problems.
Patients who received intensive respiratory support during hospitalization also showed more lung problems. They all maintained that they visit their doctor more often and their quality of life has deteriorated significantly.
