In the face of the COVID-19 coronavirus epidemic, pharmacies lack protective masks. What can replace them? Are plain cloth masks able to protect against coronavirus? These questions are answered by dr hab. n. med. Tomasz Dzieciatkowski, a virologist from the Medical University of Warsaw.

Why are face masks so important?

Protective masks play a very important role because they are a protective barrier against bacteria and viruses, both those in the mouth and nose, and those floating in the air. Professional protective masks and half masks are made of non-woven fabric (e.g. 3-layer).

Attention

While wearing them, you can breathe freely, but do not forget to replace the mask when they get wet. It is an ideal environment for bacteria to multiply.

What can replace protective masks?

Due to the spreading coronavirus COVID-19, protective masks, which are also missing in hospitals, have disappeared from the shelves. So we asked dr hab. Tomasz Dzieiątkowski, a virologist from the Medical University of Warsaw, to say what can replace protective masks. It turns out that plain linen masks or a scarf will be quite an important barrier, especially for people who cough and sneeze. It will not protect against infection, but it can protect outsiders so that we, as potentially sick people, do not infect others. Any mechanical barrier is enough here, but of course you should remember to wash such masks, and potentially scarves, if possible.
