To dress up as a Snow Maiden on a Christmas tree in kindergarten – what could be better for a girl ?! Snowflakes and princesses, fairies and Snow Queens, of course, are also beautiful. But the granddaughter of Santa Claus on this holiday, you see, has a special role. And today, with the help of a detailed master class with step-by-step video instructions, I will show you how to sew a Snow Maiden costume with your own hands!
In terms of complexity, I rate this work at 3 points (on a five-point scale). For beginners, it may be difficult to just sew a zipper, but I hasten to reassure you – we have a video on how to do it. After watching it, you will understand that it is not difficult. So, stock up on fabric, threads. Beads and good mood! New Year’s transformation begins.
The cost of materials for the costume of the Snow Maiden
Look at our charming model – the suit looks beautiful and bright on her! Of course, we chose a good fabric – yes, it may seem expensive (600 rubles costs a meter of brocade), but the plus is that you don’t need a lot of it. If you take cheap fabric – alas, the suit will look like this. I spent 1260 rubles on all materials. Leather and ribbon I found in my stocks. Agree, it turned out not expensive, given the prices for children’s New Year’s costumes in stores.
Snow Maiden costume size
I sewed the Snow Maiden costume for a girl 3-4 years old (86 – 98 cm). Below you will find patterns for heights of 86, 92 and 98 cm.
Glossary of terms
Experienced seamstresses already understood all the terms used in this material. But, perhaps, it was you, inspired by our master class, who decided to sit down at the typewriter for the first time and do not know many special words. This matter is fixable. We decipher the terms especially for you!
Stitch or sew It means joining two layers of fabric.
iron out – simply: iron the allowances (edges) in different directions.
iron – iron the allowances (edges) in one direction.
Fabric face – this is the side where the pattern or surface is clearly expressed.
At the edge of the overcast seam – sew (see above) the fabric to the width of the foot from the edge of the allowance.
How to sew a Snow Maiden costume for a girl with your own hands
Step 1. What materials do we need
- Brocade fabric (or other medium weight fabric) – 1 meter
- Faux fur (white) – 60 cm.
- Imitation leather (you can use thick felt). Needed for the soles of boots. Square 21*21cm.
- Chicken coop strip — 1 meter
- A ribbon of beads for decorating a kokoshnik – 80 cm.
- Cardboard for kokoshnik A4 format – 1 sheet
- Glue “Moment” transparent
Step 2. We sew a sheepskin coat
1. To sew a sheepskin coat, we need to make patterns for the back and shelves, sleeves, facings for the neck. Prepare all the patterns of the Snow Maiden costume for the girl in order to economically arrange the details on the fabric. From the photograph, transfer the data to a sheet of paper.
2. We move the finished patterns to the fabric. Notice how the fabric is folded. It is not just folded in half, but the edges of the fabric are offset. That is, folds on both sides. At one fold we pin a shelf and a back next to it, and at the other fold – a cap, a facing of the shelf. The sleeve and the facing of the back pass through this width. Do not forget to transfer all the notches from the patterns. Two notches on the sleeves, one notch on the shelf in the armhole area.
3. We begin to assemble our sheepskin coat from the back part. Overcast the middle seam of the back with an overlock or zigzag separately. Iron it!
4. Now we will grind the middle seam of the back, stepping back from the edge of the neckline 20-22 cm.
5. Smooth out the middle seam of the back with an iron.
6. Now we need to sew a zipper into the middle seam of the back. At first glance, this operation seems scary, but the main thing is to do everything step by step. First, baste the zipper with small stitches so that it does not move out when sewing. On the machine, change the double-horned foot to a special one. zipper foot. It does not look so scary, it has two notches, one of which needs to be inserted with a zipper and flashed. This should be done on both sides of the zipper.
And now – go ahead!
7. We turn to the iron and iron our zipper. Congratulations – half the job is done!
8. The back is ready for us. We take a shelf and put it on the back. We combine the shoulder and side seams. If you rarely sew, I recommend basting seam allowances and then sewing on the machine. If you already have a little experience, you can chop with pins and sew on a typewriter.
9. Shoulder and side seams need to be overcast. And we sweep the bottom of the sheepskin coat around.
10. Now we process the necks with a facing. We cut off the shoulder seams at the facing and grind.
11. On the overlock we overcast the shoulder seams, the middle seam of the back and the bottom of the facing, separately.
12. We prick or bast the finished facing on the neck of our sheepskin coat. Laying a line on the machine.
13. We take scissors and make notches in the rounded parts of the neck. This is necessary so that the neckline lies flat after we turn the facing inside out.
14. Now it is important to fix the edge of the back facing. To do this, change the foot of the machine to a single-legged one. This is necessary so that the line goes as close as possible to the edge of the zipper.
15. We turn out our facing. Cut off excess lightning. Now you need to bend the allowance of the middle seam of the back, and bend the edge of the facing from above. And thus the corner will turn out!
16. In order for the butt to fit nicely, we need to sew 1 mm from the seam of the piping. We bend the allowances on the facing and lay a line along it.
17. It remains to sew in the sleeves. And stitch the seam of the sleeve.
18. Overlock the seam of the sleeve on the overlock.
19. Sweep the bottom of the sleeve around.
20. Now you need to iron the seam of the sleeve with an iron. To do this, we bend the bottom by 2,5 cm and iron it with an iron.
21. The next step is to sew in the sleeves. We stick the sleeve into the armhole. We combine the notches of the sleeve and the seam of the sleeve with the side seam of the sheepskin coat. We distribute a small landing, it is needed in order for the sleeve to look beautiful.
22. Sweep the armhole around.
23. We bend the bottom of the sheepskin coat by 2,5 cm and iron it with an iron.
24. Brocade sheepskin coat is ready. It remains to decorate it with fur. To do this, cut out a strip 7,5 cm wide and about three meters long. I had a fur width of 150 cm, I cut out two strips and sewed them together.
25. We fold a long strip in half lengthwise and grind it on a typewriter at a distance of 1 cm. We will get a long tube.
26. One end of the tube needs to be sewn up on a typewriter, through this edge we will turn our tube inside out with a regular pen or pencil.
27. We need to manually sew a decorative fur cord or tube to the sheepskin coat. We combine the seam on the tube with the middle seam of the back and start basting first to the left, then to the right. We pierce both the cord itself and the brocade through and through.
And our beautiful sheepskin coat is ready!
Step 3. We sew a hat for the Snow Maiden
So, let’s move on to the next element of our costume.
1. We need to reshoot the hat pattern on a sheet of paper according to these measurements.
2. We cut out two parts of the cap with a fold. Two details are needed in order for the cap to look beautiful – both from the outside and from the inside. The seams will not be visible!
We need two strips – one of fur, the second of brocade: 10 * 52 cm.
3. You need to close the strips into a ring separately!
4. We sew the details of the cap, as shown in the video.
5. Overcast the cuts of the cap.
6. Now you need to unfold the hat and match the seams. Pin and sew on a typewriter. Do not forget to do this on both the top and bottom of the cap.
7. We fold two strips of fur and brocade face inward. It is necessary to chop in a circle and grind on a typewriter, turn it out.
8. Now we sew this ring to our hat. One layer to the top hat, fur layer to the bottom hat. We sew two layers of brocade and fur in a circle. And two layers – only from brocade – we grind and leave a small hole. We need it in order to turn the hat inside out.
9. We manually close the open seam through which the hat was turned inside out.
So the hat for the Snow Maiden is ready!
Step 4. Making felt boots
1. And again, we reshoot the details of the pattern on a sheet of paper according to these measurements.
The patterns you will need are:
Foot (leather) – 2 parts
Back Top – 2 Folded Pieces
Back bottom – 2 pieces with a fold
Front Top – 2 Folded Pieces
Front lower part – 2 pieces with a fold
2. Cut out the details of the boots. If there is leather, then we make the sole from it, if it is not there, you can use any white fabric or the fur itself! Please note that fur has a pile direction, and you need to cut it in the direction of the pile!
3. Do not forget to put notches wherever they are indicated!
4. We combine the parts along the notches, cut off and grind on a typewriter.
5. The stitching seam must be fluffed with a needle. Get the fluff that got into the sewing seam. The seam itself will be less noticeable.
6. We collect the front part of the boots along the notches.
7. We chop off the front and back of the boots along the side seams.
8. We turn the boots on the front side, the seams will need to be fluffed with a needle.
9. Now your task is to stitch the sole, combining the notches. And then chip!
10. We turn out the boots. Our handsome man is almost ready! It remains to bend the top of the felt boots 2 cm inward and sew on a typewriter.
Hooray – boots are ready!
Step 5. Kokoshnik
A hat is a hat, but your Snow Maiden cannot do without a beautiful kokoshnik. You can only do it. Choose what you like.
1. We make a pattern of a kokoshnik according to the specified measurements.
2. For the kokoshnik we need:
— Cardboard
– Glue
– Satin tape
– Ribbon of beads
— Threads.
3. According to our template, we cut out a kokoshnik from the main fabric (we have it – brocade). We make allowances of 1,5 cm on all sides!
4. Apply glue along the edge of the template!
5. Glue the template onto the brocade. On the other hand, we also apply glue!
6. We bend the edge of the brocade according to the template and glue it on the glue.
7. We make notches on the bottom of the kokoshnik so that the fabric does not pull.
8. Now you need to cut out a part from the brocade according to the template. Cut off 3 mm along all edges. This is necessary so that the edges of the brocade do not stick out along the edge of the kokoshnik.
9. Glue the lower part of the kokoshnik onto the main fabric. Don’t forget to put tape around the edges!
10. We apply the finishing line to the width of the foot. With this line we will secure the entire frame of the kokoshnik!
11. Just a little bit left! We sew a ribbon of beads by hand.
Look how beautiful our kokoshnik turned out!
It remains only to wait for the children’s matinee and dress up your girl in the Snow Maiden. Santa Claus will be delighted to see such a granddaughter! Maybe he will give a second gift – he has a lot of them!
