Do-it-yourself metal brazier: stationary, portable, prefabricated

We all love to barbecue outdoors with friends. If you have a private house or cottage, then it is better to make a stationary installation that combines a barbecue and a barbecue. If there is no desire to build something serious, you can weld a metal brazier and put it under a canopy. And if you are a lover of outdoor recreation, you cannot do without a portable barbecue. How to make a brazier out of metal with your own hands will be discussed further.

We fry kebabs if the weather allows, and when not

Metal grill size

Of all the parameters of metal braziers, only the height of the walls (side) remains more or less constant: it is usually in the range of 13–15 cm. If you do less, the coals will burn the meat, and if you raise it higher, then you will need a lot of coals for normal frying. And we do not always have the ability or desire to wait until a sufficiently large number of them are cooked. So 13-15 cm is the most reasonable choice. All other sizes of metal barbecues are selected based on your personal preferences or circumstances:

Width

The width depends on the size of the skewers used. It should be 8-10 cm smaller. If your skewers are 50 cm excluding handles, then the width of the barbecue is 40–42 cm.

Length

The length of the brazier depends on how many kebabs you plan to fry at the same time. The distance between them is about 8–10 cm. So count. If you need to lay 8 skewers at the same time, then you need 72–90 cm. In home-made barbecues, long walls are often made with recesses for the skewer. The notch may be triangular or rounded.

Everyone has their own ideas about which grill is the best.

Everyone has their own ideas about which brazier is better. And there are certainly beautiful options when beauty is combined with practicality (photo in the center).

Height

The height of the legs of the brazier is a purely individual matter. Someone does not like to bend over, and he needs a height of about 70–80 cm, while someone can fry while squatting. In portable models, they are often small – about 20–30 cm.

Thickness

If you are going to weld a stationary barbecue, then you can use a thicker metal – 3 mm or more. If it is a prefabricated modification that is transported in the trunk or carried in the hands, then it is better to use no more than 2 mm. If it seems to you that this is too small, you can make the bottom from 3, and the rest of the walls from thinner metal.

Sometimes a second plate is made at the bottom with longitudinal holes like grates. Probably, this is necessary so that the metal at the bottom does not burn out or for air to access the coals. But it is quite possible to do without this detail.

We make stationary models

There are several ways. They are not very different, but still there is a difference.

Method one: a minimum of welds.

They use a large piece of metal on which the entire “sweep” will fit. In this case, mark out all the dimensions clarified above, cut out the “extra” corners. Then carefully cut the bend points with a grinder: it will be easier to bend.

We put the drawing of the brazier on a sheet of metal, then cut off the extra corners

For welding metal 2–3 mm, inverter welding machines are best suited. The brazier is the best product for a novice welder. There is no need for tight seams. Holes are even welcome – combustion air will flow through them.

Bend the workpiece, then weld the seams

If thin metal is used – 1,5-2 mm, the bottom and walls can bend. To prevent this from happening, they can be reinforced with a corner or a profile pipe.

The bottom and walls need to be strengthened so that they do not bend from high temperatures

Next, we weld the legs from the corners or pipes. How to weld legs from pipes to a metal barbecue, see the photo. By the way, according to the same principle, you can make legs for a collapsible barbecue – choose the diameters so that they fit tightly.

Pipe legs attached to the bottom of the brazier

Another way to make legs from corners or a profile pipe. It’s even easier here: weld in the corners.

As legs for the barbecue, you can use an iron corner or a profile pipe of a small section

Method two: welding a lot

This case is suitable for you if you have metal, but it is available in small pieces. Then just cut the necessary blanks, and then weld them. In this case, you need to apply welds much more.

The second way to make a brazier out of metal with your own hands is to cut all the necessary parts for the box and then weld

After the box is assembled, it remains to weld the legs. There are no differences, and the options are described above.

Method three: a frame from the corners

The sequence of actions differs from the second option. This is a more correct way in which there is a frame that does not allow the metal to bend. The sequence of work is as follows:

  • weld the frame from the corners (in the photo on the left) or a profile pipe (in the photo on the right)
  • weld the bottom to it, and then the walls.
These metal grills are made on a frame

If you are making a brazier for yourself and with your own hands, then it makes sense to provide for comfort a countertop or a frame for laying skewers, as in the photo below. The brazier along the upper edge is reinforced with a profile pipe. The reinforcement is made so that the table and the skewer stand can be inserted at will.

And for those who like to do everything thoroughly, there is an idea to install an iron barbecue under a canopy. And the roof over the frying place will make it possible to make barbecue in any weather. This project is suitable to learn how to cook with inverter welding.

If you are interested in barbecues that are quickly made and do not require special skills, pay attention to barbecues from gas cylinders.

Do-it-yourself collapsible brazier made of metal

For trips to nature, hunting or fishing, a lightweight portable collapsible version is more suitable. There are similar products in stores, but they are made of very thin metal and they are not enough for a long time. Therefore, it is better to make a portable barbecue with your own hands.

Here are several types:

  1. folding;
  2. prefabricated.

Folding (folding) barbecues in a suitcase and without

Folding braziers are most often made in the form of a suitcase. Some have carrying handles. Others require a separate cover or some kind of diplomat suitcase.

A brazier in a suitcase is a good idea

In this embodiment, a brazier made of metal is made under the existing suitcase. All parts are mounted on metal door hinges welded by welding. The disadvantage of this model is that the legs are already very thin, but these are the costs of compactness. Portable camping brazier option. It can also be “packed” in a suitcase, but you can also sew a canvas bag: cheap and cheerful.

Another brazier that can be put in a suitcase

In this version, the bottom is made with folding legs. The rest of the parts fit inside separately. Between themselves, the sidewalls are fastened due to cuts that go to the middle of the height in different directions.

Another design of the folding brazier “Pecheneg” is shown in video format.

Collapsible braziers

They differ from the previous ones in that they consist of separate, unfastened parts. They gather on the spot. Assembly methods are different – somewhere it is a few bolts, somewhere – grooves and cuts. In the manufacture of welding is not needed, but you will need a grinder with a disk or a saw for metal.

Such braziers made of metal resemble a children’s designer. Welding is not needed, but possession of a grinder is necessary. Difficult places can be modified with a metal saw. If you decide to do something similar with your own hands, first make a layout in cardboard. It is desirable to take it the same thickness as you will use the metal. Assemble the finished layout, adjust it so that everything is perfect. Then you can transfer patterns to metal.

Brazier without welding from stainless steel will ensure durability

The following collapsible braziers are made according to the type of those sold in stores. The legs are made of corners, with cuts in the form of tongues. The tongues are slightly bent. Holes are made in the sidewalls for these protrusions. When assembling, the sidewalls are “fitted” onto the tongues.

Collapsible brazier made of metal – this is easy to do with your own hands

A collapsible brazier made of metal – this is easy to do with your own hands (to increase the size of the picture, click on it with the left mouse button) The bottom in such a model of a prefabricated brazier is not fixed by anything. The lower part of the sidewalls is bent inwards by 3–4 mm. After fixing them on the legs around the perimeter, a side is obtained. The bottom fits on this side. Having experience in operating just such a model, I can say that the design turns out to be shaky and you need to handle it carefully when frying barbecue, otherwise it will fall apart. The brazier is made of very thin metal in 1 mm. Perhaps if you use a large thickness, there will be no problem.

Another version of the prefabricated brazier differs from the previous ones in that its legs are forged. Sidewalls are attached to them due to special plates.

And you will see the simplest of metal barbecues in the photo below. With two pieces of a corner and a grinder, it can be done in a few minutes. If welding fails, you can drill holes and fasten with a bolt and nut.

Install it over the fire, hammering the legs into the ground. Not very convenient, but very easy. On the “fire” case will come down.

How to paint a metal grill

If rust on the metal really bothers you, you will have to clean it off by hand. It is advisable not to use any chemicals, work only with brushes, skins. After processing, it can be painted. Paints must be heat-resistant, and even better – heat-resistant to withstand the temperature of burning firewood. There are several options:

  • heat-resistant paint CERTA (Certa) withstands up to +900 ° C, another name is OS-82-03T;
  • heat-resistant enamel Rust-oleum, can be used up to +1093 ° C, matte, available in white, gray, black;
  • heat-resistant enamel “KO-8101” withstands heating up to +650 ° C, in twelve colors;
  • heat-resistant enamel KO-8111 Thermal, has anti-corrosion properties, withstands heating up to +600 °C;
  • Elcon Max Therm enamel is heat-resistant, up to +1200 degrees.
