Simple DIY products

For the manufacture of such simple items as a table or bench, you can use boards and timber, or you can get by with narrow logs. Even pallets left after construction will do – having them in the right quantity, you can significantly diversify furniture sets.

For work, you will need a drill and a hacksaw, an electric saw and a grinder. It is desirable, of course, to have the simplest carpentry and carpentry skills. Things will go much faster if, before starting work, you select a suitable drawing or sketch an approximate diagram on a piece of paper, estimating the required dimensions in advance.

Table

You can’t do without a spacious and roomy table in the country. They gather for a family lunch or breakfast on a warm summer day, they also organize evening gatherings with friends while delicious meat dishes are cooked on the grill.

The country table should have a simple and reliable design. To create, a metal profile in the form of a frame and a board as a tabletop is suitable. Another option is to make a table entirely from profiled timber and boards.

Let’s analyze the second option in more detail.

It is desirable to make a tabletop from edged boards 4 cm thick and 14 cm wide. Self-tapping screws are needed for fastening. The work is carried out according to the following scheme:

1. A sufficient number of boards is prepared to assemble the canvas of the required size and length. You will also need connecting jumpers.
2. Drill holes in the jumpers that match the diameter of the mounting bolts used.
3. Supports are made from timber. It is recommended to make them crossed, for which the ends are cut at an angle of 45 °.
4. The boards of the tabletop canvas are fastened in one piece, then the resulting part is attached to the supports.
5. We check the strength of the structure.

When the table is ready, it is desirable to subject it to a protective treatment. To do this, all wooden parts:

• grind;
• impregnated with drying oil;
• let dry, then paint or varnish.

Deck chair

Although such a piece of furniture has a place on the beach near the sea, it is perfect for a garden plot. Sitting on a sun lounger, you can sit sunbathing or dozing in the shade of trees.

It is easier to make it from wooden bars. The simplest design involves the use of the following materials:

• rectangular slats 25×60 mm thick – you need 6 pcs. different lengths;
• round slats with a diameter of 2 cm – 5 pcs.;
• durable fabric for the seat and backrest measuring 200×50 cm;
• connecting bolts and nuts.

Wood is better to choose from hardwood: oak, beech or birch. The fabric should also have increased strength – tarpaulin, denim or canvas will do.

Let’s explain the main stages of making a deck chair:

1. From the slats of a rectangular shape, cut into 2 pcs. 1,2 and 1,1 m long, and one more – 0,62 m.
2. Of the rails of circular cross section – 2 pcs. 0,6 and 0,5 m, and another one – 0,65 m.
3. Sand the surface carefully with sandpaper.
4. We drill 8 mm holes in long rails, stepping back 40 and 70 cm from the ends.
5. With a step of 10 cm, we make several cutouts in the form of steps – this will allow you to change the angle of the back.
6. We drill 2 cm holes for round rails to install the seat.
7. Lubricate the ends of the round rails with PVA glue, then insert them into the drilled holes.
8. Putting the whole frame together.
9. From the fabric we cut and sew the seat. The length should be sufficient so that the chaise lounge can be folded, but so that the fabric does not sag too much when unfolded.
10. The seat is attached to the round slats.

Bench

A very useful piece of furniture for a summer residence. It is pleasant to sit on the bench, it can be moved to the table, organizing a comfortable place for eating.

Now let’s look at how to create a simple and functional wooden bench with your own hands. The simplest solution is to prepare two logs of a suitable height, make cuts of the required thickness in them on one side, into which then insert a thick sanded board.

Another good option is to make a power frame from profile pipes of different diameters:

1. Two wide pipes are bent into an arc, fastened at the top and bottom with a pair of jumpers, using pipes of a smaller diameter.
2. The lower jumpers are connected by a longitudinal jumper. Fasten metal by welding.
3. The seat is made of a thick wide board or four sanded long bars. The tree is attached to the upper lintels with bolts, threading them into holes pre-drilled through the timber and pipes.

The third option is to use two concrete blocks as a base. The shop will turn out to be massive, but there is less chance that it will be stolen from you.

Sunbed

This piece of furniture will be useful for those who like to lie in the fresh air. Now we will explain how to make a sunbed with an adjustable back. This will allow you to change the angle of inclination, turning the couch into a comfortable chair.

To work, you need the following materials:

• boards measuring 5×10 cm, 3 pcs. 40 cm long, 2 pcs. – 90 cm and 1 pc. – 60 cm, from which the back will be formed;
• beam for the frame – 2 pcs. 50 cm long and 2 pcs. – 2,15 m;
• bar for legs – 6 pcs. 35 cm each, this is quite enough for a street couch;
• rails for the seat – 13 pcs. size 25x80x600 mm;
• slats for the back – 6 pcs. size 25x80x880 mm.

The frame is assembled in the following sequence:

1. A rectangle is constructed from the prepared elements, the timber is fastened with screws. By the same principle, another frame is made – a movable seat.
2. The bed of the frame is covered with transverse slats in increments of 1,5–2 cm.
3. The legs are mounted from prepared bars, connecting them in pairs at the legs and one at a time at the head. Fasten the legs at the corners with self-tapping screws.
4. The frame for the backrest is installed in the body of the common frame, leaving a small indentation so that it is convenient to move it. We cover the back frame with transverse slats.
5. The backrest is attached to the bench, stepping back from the edge of 9 cm. To regulate the slope, several corner grooves are cut out in the frame.

When the bed is assembled, it must be sanded, then varnished or painted with a special paint that does not fade in the sun.

Other options

We examined the simplest options for making furniture for a summer cottage, requiring the master to have minimal experience working with wood. However, there are other solutions as well.

Wicker furniture or furniture made of artificial rattan looks creative in the country. Getting the material is not a problem, but for manufacturing you will need to master the art of weaving. Wooden structures can be taken as the basis of furniture, covering them completely or partially with a wicker cloth.

Furniture can be made entirely of metal if you have a welding machine at hand. Finally, you can significantly increase your blacksmithing skills by making wrought iron garden structures.

A much simpler option is to build a table, a bench or even a whole corner of rest from pallets. They will need a lot, individual parts may have to be restored, for which the pallet is disassembled into parts, damaged parts are removed and reassembled.

Properly created garden furniture allows you to get an atmosphere conducive to relaxation.
